Create a resize action
Use the automate options to apply the action to multple files.
(File->Automate->batch)

Ok, I had actually gotten that far, but once you are in that dialugue box I am stumped as to how to actually get it to change size.
(you will be glad to know I start an in depth 10 wk PS class in about 2 weeks : ) |

the following will record an action that you can play that will make resized copies of your original images.
before starting, create a subdirectory below your source image folder and name it 'resized' or something to that effect.
to record your action, open an image
on the main menu, click view | actions
click the new action button and give it a name
on the main menu, click image | image size
you have to reduce by pctg to take into account a mix of portrait & landscape shots. look at the longest side, and divide that into what you would want your longest side to be, and enter that number. for example to go from 3072x2048 to 640x427, you would enter 20.83 and then change the unit type to percentage.
click ok
on the main menu, click File | Save for Web
set the quality to 100
click save and navigate to your 'resized' folder, then click ok
close your image without saving
click the stop recording button
open the file browser and navigate to your source directory (if you aren't already there)
click Edit | Select All (or simply select all the images you want to process)
click Automate and specify the action you want to play
hope this helps. good luck!

wrt to fitting landscape/portrait images when resizing, it is much easier to use the 'Fit Image' option, which lives in the File->Automate->Fit Image menu.
Just specify the longest dimension for either height or width and the aspect ratio will be taken care of. |

| i haven't tried that, but it looks like if you specified 640 to be your longest width, your portrait images would come out to 960 pixels tall...am i missing something? |

Yes, you are missing something.
If you specify height and width as 640, then the image will be resized so that the longest side is 640, with the other sized appropriately. |

Oooh Oooh ooh
GORDON You're a star!
I have used actions to resize too but percentages doesn't work for me because the originals are not all the same size to start with.
So I did it in two steps. First action resized width to 640 longest. Ran that on all images. Second action resized height to 640 longest. Ran that on all images.
Not best solution because I understand each resize affects quality?
This Fit Image tip is going to be very useful to me!
THANKS
