Today I purchased seconghand a Pentax med format 645 body (no lenses yet). I have never owned a medium format camera before and would really appreciate it if anyone can offer any suggestions about glass or even if they make a digital back for this camera. It is in superb condition and I paid 33,000YEN for it ($350 I think). Was it a good deal? what is the best lens to get first etc etc any help would be great thank you.

$350 for a Pentax 645 is a great price, there is a digital back that fits the Hasselblad and might fit the pentax if it uses 120/220 films but the price is about $1000 per megapixel.. and it comes as 16 and 22 mpixels so that makes $16.000 - $22.000.

I really think you would rather buy the Hasselblad H1D with the digital back for $22.000, then just get the back for the same price ;)

about lenses for medium format.. I don´t know.. the hasselblad is the only medium format camera I want, and the lenses costs from $2000 - $7000 so I wont be buying anytime soon :(

With medium format all the functionality of the camera is actually in the lens so you are buying that functionality with each new lens hense the high price tag (at least with the ones I'm aware of).

I can't help you with lenses though your local camera store or google might bring up something.

Thanks for the input, I have been searching around the net for various things about this camera and although the thought of a digi-back would be great, as yet, there is not one available to fit the pentax 645's but that is not the reason i bought it anyway. I am interested in getting a 45mm and 75mm lens for now as I have seen them on Yahoo auction(japan) for just over $150 and I really want to get into shooting with film again. Will I be able to use my SB800 on it? I guess I will just have to try it out.

I am quite excited about trying this format but after having a DSLR for so long now I have forgotten how to set up a real film shot in terms of apature and shutter speeds etc. I'm sure going to have some expensive fun learning it all again. anybody shooting with MF now? maybe you could offer some advice about settings please.

Thanks again

45mm on MF is badass wide... the 75mm is wide also and it's pretty standard and shouldn't cost too much.

35mm (645) = 22mm (35)
45mm (645) = 28mm (35)
55mm (645) = 34mm (35)
75mm (645) = 48mm (35)
100mm (645) = 70mm (35)
150mm (645) = 93mm (35)
300mm (645) = 186mm (35
500mm (645) = 300mm (35)

Zooms available in most registers up to about 150mm. What your subject is will tell you what lenses you need.

I paid $250 for my 645 Bronica ETRS with a 75mm lens, polariod back, 2 120 backs, a grip handle and a hard case. All in really good conditio. I think I got a good deal. The 75mm lens is good, but for portriats I would like to get something around 150mm.
