| Anyone done this before? I'm a little unclear on how exactly it works and my searches seem to bring up mostly advertisements for software. Anyone have any good resources they can point me to or suggestions for software or any kind of help at all? Thanks! |

Mac. or PC? cause if u are mac. and have a camcorder u should be able to plug the cam. into the VCR and the then run firewire to your mac. it will import in iMovie and from there u can just take it to dvd.
or if not i'm not sure how u would do it for PC i'm pretty sure u need a camcorder as a go between.
awhile back mac. world had an aritical on it i'll try to find it.....

I use a Pyro AV Link Digital Video converter... hooks up to the computer, and I can transfer VHS or go straight out of my DV camera. I use Pinnacle Studio 8 to edit. It works like a charm.
This is what the Pyro unit looks like (borrowed a pic from eBay):
I paid $99 for my unit about 14 months ago, so they're probably less than $50 now. ;o)

Is this something you want to do a lot of?
Here's my two solutions:
1. I only want to do this every once in a while
Go to a local video production company and have them do a dub. Easy, about $50.
2. I want to convert my entire VHS library to DVD
There are lots of slick DVD recorders on the market now. I saw one at Walmart during Christmas for ~$350. Hook it up in your home video system, and dub anytime you want.
I prefer to leave my computers out of the dubs. Then I can visit DPC unemcumbered while the dub goes merrily on it's way.
Hope that helps,

I have done this but found it to be very time consuming. If you are copying movies you have on VHS. I tried to do that but ended up just buying them on DVD for $15 or less. If it is home movies there are companies out there that do that and the price is reasonable. If it is home movies you don't want anyone to see or you want to do it on your own then try this:
Tiger Direct
I am sure you can find it cheaper on Ebay. I had one of these and it worked great.

We've tried copying a VHS video to DVD using Pinnacle software, and it captured it fine, but only the video recorded to the DVE, but not the audio. We can't figure it out, so I'm interested to know if anyone else has done this, also. We also captured it using our ATI card, but the same thing happened.

Before you burn the File to dvd you must transform it into a readable file for your dvd. You can use Roxio easy dvd creator it works good. A dvd Player splits audio and video.

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I'm actually asking for a friend who asked but also because I was curious about it for myself eventually. In both cases, the purpose would be to transfer old home videos to DVD (nothing that I wouldn't want anyone else to see, at least in my case). Both would be done using a PC.
Doesn't look as complicated as I was beginning to feel like it would be.

When we used Pinnacle Studio 8, it recorded it as MPEG2. I thought that it recorded both the video and the audio and that it could be burned directly to the DVD from there. Is there something else that we have to do?

Create a vcd out of the Mpeg file??
But I'm not sure. I think when you create the VCD it splitz the video and audio, but don,t quote me on this..

I am about to do this myself with some old home video I have on VHS.
What I am going to have to do, but should work fine though it mat cost a little quality is:
1) Record from my VHS to my camcorder, which now has firewire.
2) Use firewire to transfer camcorder footage to PC
3) Convert/burn etc
I don't think I can go direct from my VHS mnachine to PC without buying h/w I don;t really need.
