After I took some pictures of Esther, I have received a few requests to shoot some portraits. I'll be the first to admitt my work isn't perfect, but people seem to like the portraits I have done. I've followed Kevin's progress with tfp(?) and a few others. So my question is, when do you know you're good enough to get paid? Not just the sitting fee, but the same as a pro (or at least enough to make it worthwhile)?
Esther has been showing her pictures to everyone and wants me to shoot more and my deal with her is I get a model release and she has the say in what gets offered as stock but I don't want that deal with everyone. I have a few referrals from her. And people at work are asking me to shoot them. Ack. So far all my portraits have been done on location but I'm setting up a small studio in a friend's heated garage soon so I don't have to worry about a lot of overhead, yet.
If you have some experiences with this, I'm all ears. |

| As soon as people are willing to pay. If someone asks for a print, say an 8x10 of something, give a price. $5 is as low as an 8x10 should go, and that's what I've been offering them for until recently. |

| don't sell yourself short. Definitely charge. You have talent and people want to use it. Don't give it away for free. If they get offended by being charged, then I wouldn't shoot them. If you start making free shots for people it will be even more difficult to charge later. |

When do you start charging?
When someone askes you to shoot something you would not otherwise be shooting; and whenever someone is willing to pay for prints of something you have already shot.
