After I took some pictures of Esther, I have received a few requests to shoot some portraits. I'll be the first to admitt my work isn't perfect, but people seem to like the portraits I have done. I've followed Kevin's progress with tfp(?) and a few others. So my question is, when do you know you're good enough to get paid? Not just the sitting fee, but the same as a pro (or at least enough to make it worthwhile)?
Esther has been showing her pictures to everyone and wants me to shoot more and my deal with her is I get a model release and she has the say in what gets offered as stock but I don't want that deal with everyone. I have a few referrals from her. And people at work are asking me to shoot them. Ack. So far all my portraits have been done on location but I'm setting up a small studio in a friend's heated garage soon so I don't have to worry about a lot of overhead, yet.
If you have some experiences with this, I'm all ears.

As soon as people are willing to pay. If someone asks for a print, say an 8x10 of something, give a price. $5 is as low as an 8x10 should go, and that's what I've been offering them for until recently.

don't sell yourself short. Definitely charge. You have talent and people want to use it. Don't give it away for free. If they get offended by being charged, then I wouldn't shoot them. If you start making free shots for people it will be even more difficult to charge later.

When do you start charging?

When someone askes you to shoot something you would not otherwise be shooting; and whenever someone is willing to pay for prints of something you have already shot.
