I totally agree, but that's not much different from a goal of scoring well. High scoring shots tend to get comments and faves, and I usually try to shoot something that will provoke positive comments. As a result, I've had at least 11 comments (and usually over 20) on every single entry since July, and had a string of 13 consecutive entries with at least one fave. Woohoo! Looks like I'm slacking off lately though...

I should've stuck with this one! I always tend to pick the wrong one! I think next time I am going to go against my judgement! :)

You're right of course... I have a higher average than jjbegiun, yet I'm nowhere near his caliber (nor are ribbons an accurate benchmark, as anastasia has yet to win her first). To be fair, though, it's not so much a matter of picking and choosing challenges as it is finding the time to shoot ANYTHING. There are only a few challenges that I've NOT entered after making an effort to shoot- either because I didn't make the deadline or it just didn't work out as I planned. If I was worried about protecting my average, I certainly wouldn't have entered Pain, among others.

EDIT- sorry to derail this forum thread. I got kinda carried away.

However you're doing it, you've picked some good ones : )
Did you ever get your "Road" stock photo?

Great imagery and tonality, but a little too soft.

I agree... A little post processing should take care of it.

Well I agree about the favs, but I disagree that score is the only way to achieve that. The difference is: you don't need to enter a challenge to get favorites and comments. Challenges are very different beasts, and the "doesn't meet the challenge in my 4 second viewing - 1" voters deflate any sense you might get of how good a photo is.

I personally have little hope of ever winning a ribbon here (after 52 or so challenges, I'm getting the picture). And what I like to do is not really well aligned with the challenges. I didn't even do very well in the one abstract challenge, even though it was one of my better works. Still too unusual for the voters.

But this is a very giving group overall, and the forums are one of the best parts of DPC IMHO. So I have started doing more "posts", and gauging how much people really like shots by accrued favorites. Those are the ones I will look to put on DPCPrints, as well as to print and give as gifts.

But consider this; you have willingly posted (most recently) to this thread an image you did NOT enter in the AA challenge because you felt it wasn't "good enough". We, of course, have disagreed with you and praised the image, which no doubt gives you a certain degree of good feeling, as it were. So my question is, why are you willing to expose this (or any other image) to the forums and NOT to the challenge? Either way, judgment is being passed.

The difference to me is that one is an enty into a contest and the other is a 'look what I did'. I didnt ask for judgement but getting positive comments certainly did boost morale, yes. Still, the people who did comment are only a small proportion of the people who vote and it is still entirely possible to have scored in the 5 range. I havent got to the point where I only show people my absolute best ever images, mainly because I'm usually surprised at what some people like. I do, however, prefer to enter contests with images that I feel will at least have some chance in the competition.

Nice shot for AA, but could maybe use just a tad more sharpness.

I agree as well. I no longer submit to each challenge for points, but only to the ones that appeal to me. I've stopped trying to please the masses, its too frustrating to submit a photo that you feel is one of your best photos, just to end up with an average or less than average score. I have been trying for some time now just to get a photo in that would replace some of my top five on my profile page.

Ansel Adams is one of a few photographers that has inspired me to pick up a camera in the first place. I was really looking forward to this challenge cause I thought I had a chance to replace one of my top 5 photos. But, once again, my photo is hovering at an average of 5.5. I'm stuck in the average zone on this site.

Here is an outtake, nothing like the one I submitted! I can't believe how crappy this type of photo looks at 640X640 and 150K. Sure wish the size limit would increase for challenges like this one where DOF and tonal range is extremely important. My dark greys all turn black and you can barely make out some of the detail.

For what it's worth, I remade and resubmitted my 640 image 8 times before I was satisfied. I did the reworking at the 640 size, and it paid off. The full size is fine, it prints beautifully. I had to really slave over the 640 to make it work.

You resaved a jpg 8 times at 640 and it still looks good? Damn! I guess it worked out ok since your score is in the 6's. Mine would have lost way too much of it's important details.

I think he means from the original, not opening, saving, opening, etc. Just 8 tries.

Robert--as the keeper of the AA torch (at least here), I'd be curious to hear what I might improve on my own conversion, at least with regards to representing the zones...

Or anyone elses. :) I had trouble deciding between mood, contrast, and darkness, without darkening too much. In the end, the levels I chose required me to dodge the trees so they didn't become too dark.

Yes, I know, if I had finished it on time and entered it, perhaps I'd have those comments, but not too likely ;)

I missed the deadline to submit. I'd really like to get some comments and critiques on this.
