i should have reshot this one.

The tree shot doesn't have enough DOF to really work in this challenge. The gravestone shot is brilliant, a little work on the blocked-up shadows and it would be insanely good.

Excellent outtakes... lemme see.. I think I have about 30..only they are all of the same shot I entered just edited 3 gazillion different ways. Only had one shot that stood a prayer of staying over a 5 and its on the slow coast downwards...

Level the horizon and this is so pure it almost aches. Perhaps a slightly closer-to-the-snag POV would make it compositiuonally stronger...

here is my outtake

was my "intake" until 15 min before the voting. Changed my mind in the last moment and entered something completely different.

I'd recognize those Torrey Pines anywhere, except of course they're basically only THERE. But seriously, that tree branch framing the top in is SO un-Ansel. I can't recall he ever did that. Nice scene though.

I wavered over entering this,

also considered this,
and then it was too late.

But this effort by my 12 year old son I really liked:

I wanted to enter this one but I wasn't satisfied with my photos' I figured the voters would be brutal on meeting the AA style and I knew the competition would we rough. So I chickened out.. How would these have held up?

My crappy outtake. There are no good nature subjects around me in Indiana.

I heard that parts of Indiana are so flat that if you stand on 5 layers of toilet paper you can see a mile farther...

pretty much...especially around here. Southern Indiana is noce, but up north here, is flat and boring.

Well there is are the dunes in Dunes State Park. Don't know how far you are from there. Otherwise, you're right. You mean you didn't want to take a 4 hour drive for the challenge to go to Brown County?

Went with something completely different for my submission. I like this one, but I fear it turned out a little too dark and lacking enough detail in the background trees.

This is nothing like my entry. Just something else I almost entered. The dory dominates the scene a little too much. I didn't get a chance to reshoot.

Your image is better than the one I entered and mine is doing very well. My original intent was to enter a jagged mountain scene (there are plenty of those around here) with a dramatic sky, but nature would not cooperate with both mountain and sky the way I wanted so... no mountain. :)

Seeing what others decided not to enter makes me wonder about my decision to put one in. I do think mine looks like an AA type shot, but some of the ones in this thread are far superior photos.

I find it intriguing that so many people have expressed a sentiment like "I was going to enter this one but I figured it wouldn't do well so I decided to sit it out. having seen all the entries, I'm glad I didn't enter."

I've entered 19 out of 22 challenges since I joined, and only one entry has broken into the top 30. I was fully aware on nearly all these entries that 50th percentile would be a surprsingly good finish, and I was correct in that assumption. I expected my Bokeh to do well, and it finished in 77th percentile. I thought my Architecture would do well, but it was hammered. My best finish to date was a "day of" snapshot in road signs that garnered me a 22nd place.

But I keep on doing it, for the sheer fun of it. What's holding y'all back, anyway? Is it not fun if you don't score? That seems sort of an odd attitude to me. How can you have fun if you don't play?

You have precisely the right attitude, Robert. I've seen some amazing photographs score very poorly in this venue, while mediocre ones took top honors. You just can't predict the members reaction to any given image. I am generally pleased if my score is anywhere above 5.0 and not terribly disappointed if it is lower!

It's not just about fun for me, it's about entering something that I think is good enough for me. Maybe I've become too much of a perfectionist. When I do decide to enter for the fun of it I usually get a low score and that does hurt the morale some. It's like I have created a level with my images that I like to meet or exceed and anything less is subpar and disappointing.

Like Moodville, it's about more than just having fun for me. Anytime I'm out shooting, I'm having fun and learning, but for challenge entries I set the bar at my profile average. Every time I beat that average, it goes up a little and I have to work harder the next time, but the results are more rewarding. Only rarely will I enter a shot knowing that it won't fare well (less chaff for the voters and less stress for me). ;-)

I don't mean to be argumentative; you're a very good photographer and clearly have high standards. But consider this; you have willingly posted (most recently) to this thread an image you did NOT enter in the AA challenge because you felt it wasn't "good enough". We, of course, have disagreed with you and praised the image, which no doubt gives you a certain degree of good feeling, as it were. So my question is, why are you willing to expose this (or any other image) to the forums and NOT to the challenge? Either way, judgment is being passed.

I'm not sure what I'm trying to express here, really, but I guess the bottom line is I particularly appreciate it when very good photographers enter "the best they came up with" and take their lumps with the rest of us average joes. Gives more people the thrill of beating ya, you know?

edit after seing calvert's post; I'm not a hardass about this, you guys all have my respect. I can understand that position, it's just not one I share. If I DID share it, Architecture and Adams are the only challenges I'd have entered.

Forum posts don't go on your "permanent record" so to speak. I've entered shots that I thought were ribbon contenders yet didn't clear 6, and I've sat out challenges with shots that probably would have scored well. I like playing show and tell in the forums, but I'm only going to enter something I personally feel good about.

it's not about the scores for me anymore. i enter images i like and ones that i would shoot anyway and just happen to meet the challenge. sometimes they score well and sometimes they don't but i always like what i choose to submit and it's something i would like to see hanging on my wall. that doesn't mean that i'm not sometimes disappointed in the scores i receive. of course, i would love to win the blue ribbon every time! :) lately, though, my goal is comments and favs. to me, being chosen as a fav photographer or to have one of my photos chosen as a fav is like winning a blue ribbon. it lets me know that i have touched someone with my work. in my mind, that's the ultimate goal.

I agree. I don't get too many comments which is frustrating.

This difference in philosophies is one of the reasons that you can't rely on someone's overall average score as an indicator of whether they are a "good" photographer.

I think those of us who take up the challenge every week and submit our best idea for the challenge, sometimes in apparent disregard for the quality of execution, probably harbor a subtle, perhaps subconscious resentment of those who submit selectively to challenges in the hope of protecting their overall average, because that's the stat almost certainly used by the casual visitor to check and see who are the "best photographers" on the site.

That said, I think it's perfectly fine for people to choose which photos/challenges to enter using whatever basis they want. I made my own choice a long time ago, that I wanted to try to meet (almost) every challenge in some way, and recognizing that my average score would suffer. There are some people who only submit when they have an outstanding example for that challenge. I usually use an inexpensive camera, some people have dSLRs and several lenses ... some shoot landscapes and some studio macros ...
