For the last 4-5 months I have been trying to come up with a business name. I've thought up a few but nothing that really grabs me. It's to the point where I have no choice but to hurry up and get a name. I'm starting to get into art shows and things and eventually I'll need to start providing a tax number.

So, I was wondering if any of you clever people could throw out some words or name ideas that might spark a business name for me. I live in central NY; the Finger Lakes region. The majority of my work is outdoor work - waterfalls, lighthouses, animals, but I shoot other things too.

Some local words/things include:

Schuyler (pronounced sky-ler)
Burdett
Seneca Lake
Hector
Finger Lakes

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Just a thought Jen, whilst its good to have a company name, would it not be more personal to use your name? I do a bit of web design/database stuff and use a comapany name because it sounds like there are lots of people doing 'stuff' with photography its more personal so maybe just using your name would be best? If you need a company name for tax reasons then why not promote yourself as Jen XXXX of great company name.

"Jen G photography" is kinda catchy.
Best of luck on your venture!

I was thinking of some way to incorporate nature and your name... something along the lines of Jen'natural Images or something. It might make sense, or I might just be insane. It's hard to tell these days. ;o)

I've considered using my name but I'm sort of embarrassed/shy about it. lol Even when talking to people I say, "I take pictures." because saying "I'm a photographer." seems to assume expertise... I'm just sort of modest I guess. I'll consider using my name again, though. Thanks for your opinion.

Good list, Daniel. I like "Finger Lakes Photography" a lot. Lake Scapes is nice but it sort of limits the subject to lakes, I think... I like the spin-off from bear_music's too.

"Jen's Purty Pichers" hahahaha....This may just be the winner! It's hilarious and it's probably the only one on this page people around here could understand. ;-)

Ima-Jen is cool. I had actually thought up "PhotoJenic" at one point...

Brian - I may go with something along those lines. Thanks for the good wishes!

Laurie - It's okay to be insane. ;-) Thanks for the suggestion. It's a cool name.

It might just be me being odd but I wouldnt put 'Finger' in the name. I guess finger lakes is a place but some people may not know that and finger lakes just sounds weird. Fingers, hmm. Its like being called "Feet Deserts" or something?

Luminous Lakes sounds good, but maybe a bit similar to Luminous Landscapes though? Jenny's Images and Images by Jen etc all sound a bit amateurish to me and not very business like. Au Natural sounds a cliché and kinda like a shampoo company, hehe. I do like Lake Scapes Imaging but Lakescapes as one word I think is better :) Sorry to be so negative about the suggestions and not make any myself! It just gets me sometimes when I see businesses advertised with names that either dont suit the business, are waaaay cliché, or are just plain tacky (eg "Instant-Loans-4-u!!!" or "The Fantastic Car Shop!!!) Only trying to help, honest :)

That's great!! Only problem may be when you tell people the name they might just spell it in the normal way and not understand your personalisation.

I really like PhotoJenic. If you don't use it, I will!! :-) Just kiddin'. Or maybe even PhotoJen Inc. to relieve the spelling confusion that Konador mentioned ... I dunno, I'm just grabbing at straws here. Best of luck in your business endeavor though. :-)

LOL, Thanks Ben. I don't see it as being negative at all. I'm glad you shared your opinion. :-)

As for PhotoJenic I sort of liked it when I first thought it up but decided it may be a bit cheesy...

hehe, go ahead and use it! ;-) PhotoJen is cool too. Maybe you should be that??

I never knew this would be such a pain. It's just so permanent....and I'm so darn picky! lol

Good point, one of my domain names (currently leading to nowhere) is AM-2-PM.co.uk. This sounds great, not only telling peeps my business worked 24/7 but is also mine and my gf's initials. Now, try telling peeps how to get there over the phone!

Your name should be easy to pronounce by the general population which you're targeting. Also, it should be easy to market and develop ad campaigns for. Using your name as your business sometimes has benefits for the personality factor (and can mitigate the need for a fictitious business license), but does fairly little to make your business a viable commercial entity beyond local wedding and portrait work.

I would use something clever enough to be immediately recognizable as a photography business, but with a hint toward the unknown or something fun. Some options:
-FabFoto Studios
-ImaginIt Photography
-Lakeside Professional Imaging (a little stuffy)
-API (Archival Photographic Imaging) Studios (also stuffy, but gets phone book points)
-Phenom Photography
-aCutAbove Imagery
-MustSee Photography
-JenFoto Studios (your name!)
-Get Closer! Studios

And I think Photojenic is good, but you'd need to make a point of the spelling being wrong. Like, have your logo look like PhotoJenic.

Just my 2 cents. :)

There's always my first business name, which is long defunct and up for anyone who wants it: See It My Way...

Can't get much more in-your-face than that...

Robt.
