I'm entering a local juried exhibit and would like your help. I can enter up to three shots. Some people have told me to enter a series because they tend to do better. I don't know that I have three really strong images to form a good series, though. I'm not sure a series would matter in this particular exhibit because my understanding is that individual images will be judged, not the group of images you display.

Below are what I think are some of my stronger images and a link to my site is in my sig.

#1 .....#2.....#3.....#4
#5.....#6.....#7

Butterflies

Which three (of the above or otherwise) do you think would be the best to submit? Your thoughts and advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance,
Jen

Edited to assign numbers.

I think the waterfall photo is beautiful. I would possibly try to work the 'brown' out of the water in the fall though. Other than that, I think it's a top notch image :)

Thanks, John. That means a lot coming from you. :-)

I wondered about the brown myself. When I've shown this photo to others some were like you and said remove it and others said it was natural, they liked it, and to leave it. At the time the shot was taken the water was raging (although you wouldn't know it) with dirty, muddy water from the rains of the remnants of a summmer hurricane. I was surprised the image wasn't more brown...and actually had a hint of blue. It's one of my favorite shots. Thanks for your comment.

Here's the non-muddy version:

What do you think? Better?

Any thoughts on a 2nd and 3rd submission?

Thanks again,
Jen

I definitely like the revised version better.

I would go with the first of the two lighthouse photos as a second submission.... Possibly use the second light house as well.. it seems a little 'flat' though... I'm not sure...

i like the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. which is the lighthouse, bridge, waterfall. wonderful photos

edit: the non-muddy waterfall version i prefer.

I like them all

Thanks John, Evan, Tom...

The first lighthouse, the Highland Light, is hanging on my wall...but it has a little flaw that I should have pointed out. On the left middle of the image, in the cloud, the coloring is a little funky. You can't notice if it's on the wall or even if you hold it...but if you look real close you can see it. It looks like this:

Clickable.

This is a 100% crop. I've tried to figure out a way to reduce it or get rid of it (in a clean manner) but have not been successful.

I'm not sure how badly this would effect it as a submission...or if at all, depending on how much the study the images.

I personally like the 2nd (Lighthouse) and the 4th (Waterfall).

Good Luck.

Use the lasso tool to select the sky over the entire image. Copy that selection and paste it to a new layer. Apply a decent amount of gaussian blur to the new layer and then reduce the opacity of it to eliminate a majority of the issue.

Thanks, John! That has definitely helped. It's still there a bit but not as bad and will hopefully not show up in the print. It's just that one patch and it was in the original. Thank you for your help!

Vinny - Thanks you!

You can probably eliminate it completely by applying the dust/scratches filter at one or two pixels (threshold = 0) to that new layer before you do the gaussian blur.

I wish I had more time right now to go through ALL your photos; you do marvelous work. But right now, of those posted below, the 2nd and 3rd are the real stand outs for me. You can't go wrong wiht any of these, though.

Once again, thank you! It's lookin' great. Can't wait to print it again and see the difference on paper. I owe you one!

Just wanted to wish you lots of luck! Beautiful pics!

Jen, you have an incredible portfolio. It's not that you don't have three strong ones--you have too many to choose!

Now, can you better define what you are asking? The links below go to categories. Are you saying pick the best from these categories, or are the thumbnails your own first choice?

I'm working now but I'll go through them all later tonight.

Regards--Neil

Skip: Thanks for the vote of confidence! Thank you for voting, too. Appreciate it.

Kavey: Thanks a bunch. I think it will be fun (assuming the jury votes me in) and it will be a great learning experience as well.

Neil: *blush* Aw, thanks! That's awfully kind of you. The link to the butterfly gallery was just my way out of posting all of the thumbs. :-) They are some of my better macro work and although I prefer the thumbs above, I thought considering a macro might be a good idea for variety as well. Anything in the thumbs, link, or my site is fair game...but the above, to me, is my best work. Thanks again for the very nice compliment. I'll watch for post later.

Too late for another one? Series? 6, 4, and 5 or //butterflysis.smugmug.com/gallery/162937/1/9713834 (not dramatic, but an heart/eye-puller for me.)

or...... if you're thinking of editing out browns, how about = //butterflysis.smugmug.com/gallery/162937/1/8040043 ???

Then again, I love the first Lighthouse. Boy, it must be rough to have people tell you they can't narrow your work down only 3 best choices! You've shared some wonderful images with us. Thank you. Kathy

They're all beautiful, Jen. My personal favorites are #7 and the two waterfall shots. Good luck!
