Hi there, I'm new to Dp Challenge and am still learning how things work. Can someone please tell me, after I have submitted a photograph and voting is taking place in that challenge, when other users vote and submit a helpful comment or criticism about my photo, can I respond to them or ask them a question at this stage, or do I have to wait until voting has finished? Thanks for listening to my dumb question!

There is nothing that says you can't, but many people don't like it, especially if you are questioning them on their comment/vote.

Not a dumb question at all. For some people, they would rather not know who the photographer was who took the shot, but generally those are the "Hidden During Voting" photographers. Although it is not taboo to respond, some users get upset. Frankly, if you feel like you want to respond, you should go ahead with it as that is what I do. However, I have found that people will not like to be badgered about raising your score by what you are telling them in a Private Message; most think that it's just a waste of time since it will matter so little. Just my insight :)

Welcome to DPC!

The only dumb question is one that is never asked.

Most people here like to keep their image anonymous until the end of the challenge. In the end it's up to you as there is no rule to prevent you from responding to comments.

You'll learn that some of the people really don't like it. But for the most part the people are genuine, and honest, and will be happy to help out. If they don't want to respond then they won't, but feel free! At least in my eyes. Best of luck to you, and saddle up for this community. It can be one heck of a wild ride. But the rewards and knowledge you'll gain are worth every minute!

Personally I like recieving comments at any time and have also never had a problem when I have PM someone during a challenge (which is rare). To me, it is about intent. Are you trying to learn more or clarify something or interact in a counstructive way?

Simply to argue, flame, or try to get someone to raise a score given is counter productive and hurts the learning process. So, think about intent, most people here want to help and the timing isn't that critical.

Timing isn't that critical for learning, but may be for the emotional aspect of replies. Do the right thing and wait until voting is over before surrendering the anonymity of the challenge.

I wish there was a way to respond right on the comment, but your response would remain anonymous until voting is over. Kind of like on eBay, how you can respond to feedback left. The whole "was this comment helpful" box I don't find very useful. I mean, I check it if I feel that it really was useful, but I've noticed that some people check it off regardless if the comment they received was constructive or not.

I guess I'm one of those people who check it off regardless - it's a way to say "thank you" to someone who has taken the time and energy to tell me what they thought. I think of it less as way to address the constructiveness of the critique and more of way to acknowledge that I was pleased someone was moved enough by the image to say a few words about it. It takes more effort to comment than just vote, and if someone feels their comments are helpful it works as an incentive to comment more (hopefully). The only time I don't mark it helpful is if I think the comment was kind of rude. Thankfully I haven't had many of those!

Rude message are what I mean about "constructive" vs "not constructive". I don't mind if the comment is negative, but I don't care for childishness...

After the challenge is over you do have the option to respond to any comment that was made the same way that you are able to respond to a post here on this thread. All comments are set up in thread form as soon as the voting deadline is met.

Being new to DP challenge, i appreciate any comments made about my submissions whether they be negative or positive. I see myself as the "pupil" being taught by the "masters". I aim to earn as much about photography as I can, and appreciate any comments. thanks for your replies!
