Didn't want to threadjack This Thread.

But now I'm confused...tons of threads around here stating the 50mm f/1.8 is a must have lens due to sharpness and cost. The linked thread is kind of giving me second thoughts about the quality/usefulness of the 50mm 1.8.

I'm on my last cup o coffee and was about to head up to the camera shop to pick up EF 50mm f/1.8 II for 70 bucks (it's raining and I need a good indoor low light lens) then I observed some samples in that thread.

I'm looking for a budget, low light prime that takes sharp pictures to throw on my 20D...Why do so many suggest that lens and others have issues with it?

Stop me now...if this lens doesn't really perform...

it performs, when used properly...
in november i bought the 50mm 1.8, and sigma 105mm macro.
i have used solely these two lenses since.
it's worth the money!

It is a sharp lens. I own one. Great little lens. If you would like a better one dish out a few hundred more and go for the 50mm f/1.4.

It's been on my camera since I bought it before Christmas. It's all I use now - well it beats the kit lens (my only other one).

More examples... all taken with the 50mm f/1.8:

Certainly the best bang for the buck available.

The other thread is about the wisdom of buying a ten year old Mark I for a certain price. This is not the same lens you would buy new, which would be the Mark II. The questions of sharpness in that thread related to whether that single lens had been harshly enough treated to mess up the optics so that it was perhaps not a good buy. The Mark I is a metal construction with very good optics. It is no longer made and yet will cost (used of course) on average twice what a plastic Mark II will.

Any single lens may be a bad build of a design, but the 50mm 1.8 Mark II has a very nice optical design by any standard.

This lens rocks...picked it up and headed for the beach even though overcast/rain...right out of the box crystal clear shots...for 74 bucks this lens is great.

Thanx all
