The shots of the cowboys getting ready in the chutes, the copenhagen, guys leaning their boots on the rails while talking and watching the other riders... those are some of the coolest shots I've seen and really highlight the "cowboy" image. This Texas gal can't WAIT until you have some to post! And God Bless Chris LeDoux! ;o)

You guys are funny! Actually, I WAS laughing when I got off the phone with the guy, picturing just exactly the "dude ranch" scenario!!

But, not to worry, I've been around horses/cows/farms most of my life, and have jeans, flannel shirt, and beat up boots. The hat's the problem. The only hat I have is an old straw "Shady Brady", and I don't know the "etiquette" of wearing western hats - can I wear a straw hat in the winter??? LOL!! I can't believe I'm even asking that!

As far as the lighting, Doug, it's only Fri and Sat night, at an indoor arena, I've pretty much decided to "wing it" this trip. I'm going to scope it out, see if I can learn something about how rodeo photography is done, and maybe get a couple of decent shots while I'm at it. Guess I'd say I'm looking at it as a learning adventure.

OH, and it's NOT THIS Friday and Saturday, it's NEXT Friday and Saturday! I was confused last night!

Tell that to that guy's wife, who's pissed at him over his habit. I'd focus on the fun happening at the rodeo. These events were a big part of my life growing up and I have the fondest memories of them. The photographic opportunities are endless if you can blend in and you know people who are there.

Some of the quainter rodeo related scenes I can recall:
-Tailgate barbeques waiting for the next go-round
-The "rustlers" at the end of the arena herding the cattle back down the shoots. This will be a great, dusty and emotive shot if done correctly in the right light.
-Kids buying stuff at the snack stand, decked out in there new wranglers and hats which are usually far too big for their heads.
-Rows and rows of trucks and trailers provide a interesting perspective sometimes.
-Hot shot teenagers running the shoots. They're the ones letting out the steers for team roping, bulldogging, etc. They get super serious about their job and will have the most interesting faces of anyone there.
-There are a lot more, but I'm stuck here reminiscing about my youth and I can't think of them. :)

Thanks for your post, bledford! I've only ever been to rodeo as a spectator in the stands, with my parents, when I was (quite a bit) younger. I am not familiar with a lot of the scenes you describe, and I do so appreciate you giving me ideas about what to look for.

Thanks!
Linda

Linda, Bledford forgot one really interesting rodeo characters. The old retired cowboys, especially the really bull-legged ones, like my father and grandfather. They are really fun to talk to, and have more stories about their society than anyone I know. They also usually have the wrinkles to show their hard life and efforts. Good luck, Van

I've shot a few. here are just a couple out of hundreds of keepers. rodeos can be lots of fun, nothing like really cheap trashy food and beer, and a whole lot of dust in the air!

Linda,

Thanks for posting your question. . . I have nothing to add here except that this was one of the most interesting, refreshing, and enlightining threads I have read on this site in a long time. (I read Gordon's links from beginning to end.) I only went to one rodeo in my life (in Canada when I was about 12). And now, I sure do have the 'hankerin' to take one in. Again, thanks (and to all the contributors as well).
P.S. Good luck with your shoot!
