It's the canon EF 75-300mm f4-5.6 III

I couldn't resist any longer. Although it was dark out when I got home so I couldn't play too much with it...

...

Also picked up a UV filter too 58mm -- so it fits both my 18-55 and the new beast ;-)

David, I'm worried about your back. You shouldn't have to lug that extra weight around. I'll be your caddy. Send me the lens (COD even) and I'll carry it for your for a few months.

(whatta guy)

I bought that lens last weekend and I'm absolutely in LOVE with it! It's been so much fun to play with! :o)

hehe thanks all.

Laurie...did you get the same one or the USM one? I might be really stupid, but I'm assuming mine isn't the USM -- is it fairly loud when trying to focus?

I don't know -- I was outside for like 10 minutes and the sun was really just about down at that point. My house is small so there's really no way to focus much beyond say 20 yards or so.

I guess I'm just a little nervous something might be wrong with it...it seemed to take a while to focus. But like I said, light was not just bad, it was horrible...like 1 second shutter speed everywhere I pointed even my 18-55.

Congrats !! I have the IS version of the lens I like it. The only problem I can see is a very slow focus :(

I got the IS USM version... it's absolutely fabulous! It makes some noise, but it's not loud. The IS is excellent too, and now I feel better about not lugging the tripod around with me. ;o)

I have and very much like the same. Focus speed is fine but it does take a second to bring up IS.

The IS is USM though, correct?

Yes, but its not a ring usm and doesn't give you control on focus tuning in AF and its slow :(

That problem is inherent in all lenses wth a wide zoom range and a variable max aperture setting. USM might speed the AF up some, but the focus will still seem slow compared to other zooms such as the 70-200/2.8.

I'm sure I'll come up with some conclusions as soon as the weather's nice when I don't work.

Either way -- the lens will definately get me where I need to go...and now I have a ton more oppurtunities to go shoot stuff. I could just sit somewhere for hours waiting for wildlife, go to the zoo, or shoot a sporting event...I'm glad I picked it up -- I had been thinking about it for a while now but today after work, I just had to do it before the little bit of extra money I had disappeared and I had nothing to show for it.

--

On another note, my $50 tripod might be getting a bit out-dated now. It was GREAT for my fuji s5100 -- but even with my 300d and 18-55 it seemed to be a bit squirrley...I can't imagine it with this 75-300 on top of it.

--

I'm am glad however, that I took a friend's advice when purchasing a camera bag -- for the third time around -- and purchased for the future. There's still room for another lens -- possibly a 50mm 1.8 in the future and I could probably fit a flash in there too...but I'd have to move some of the compartments around.
