If you are talking wide angle to include fisheye lenses then the Sigma 8mm f/4 would be the widest. If not then Canon and Sigma both have a 14mm f/2.8 super-wide. In the zooms Canon has the 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 and Sigma has the 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6. Choose wisely.

There's also the 10-22mm zoom...

Yeh, you got me in the middle of my edit. I have a narrow tendency some times to think only in primes. Sorry.

The 10-22 has the distinction of only working on a couple of EOS cameras just now (It's an EF-S mount, not EF)

Still remains to be seen which direction Canon go in the future, but they seem to be sticking with the EF-S mount for the cheaper DSLRS

10-22 sounds great but $800 is quite a chunk for me any alternatives to that lense out there?

I think I listed them all. Sorry.

Sigma makes a 12-24mm...which I have and am quite happy with.

Edit: It runs about $650

The best lower-cost alternatives are the fisheyes. Look at the Canon 15mm or the Sigma 15mm. That will give you roughly the same field of view as an 11mm rectilinear lens (about 89 degrees HFoV), but will give more curvature to straight lines. The images can be "defished", but I often like the fisheye perspective better. It gives more natural shape to objects, especially people, near the periphery. Careful framing can reduce the appearance of the "fisheye effect."

You can also stitch photos to get wider angle view, depending on what it is you are photographing. I use PTGui, which is by far the best stitching program I have found. This is a pain compared to having the right lens, but for those cases where you simply don't have the lens it is a good way to get the shots that would other be missed.

Good advice! This also has the advantage of increasing the resolution (number of pixels) but has the disadvantage of requiring relatively stationary subject matter (though a moving subject confined to one frame is OK). Once you get addicted to panoramas, it never stops!
