Nicowens, hawg jawls (hog jowls) are the fatty meat on a pig's face. I was surprised no one asked about cracklin. That comes from the pig's skin (I think) and the old folks liked to add it to their corn bread. All I know is it is chewy and in no way adds to the flavor of the corn bread.
I guess the moral of all this turnaround in subject matter is for us to celebrate our diversity.
you are so right. variety is the spice of life to be enjoyed by all. now, who likes chitterlings? ;-) [/i]
Craklin is also an English thing. Sunday dinner time with a pork roast and a nice bit of salted craklin. Yum yum ;-)

Cool, I didn't know the British were into pork roasts and cracklin. All I ever hear about English food is blood pudding and fish 'n chips. |

I wonder if that is because many of the settlers in the South (especially the southern Appalachians) were from the England/Scotland/Ireland area. On another note: I had to watch a documentary in a grad class one time about the history of English. One section of it showed a small section of Ireland that has a particular dialect. I was the only one in the class that could understand what they were saying. It wasn't easy, but they sounded just like my grandparents and that generation. (Geographical note: I live in theh mountains of Western North carolina -- we have a definite accent here, especially in the older generations. We were secluded from the rest of civilization for so long, a lot of it has held on, even though it is disappearing slowly.)

Aren't there word censoring scripts to bleep out profanity, etc? It'd be nice if they could actually replace the word in question with some randomn statement like *I'm an idiot* *I shave my butt* or *This is my favorite photo* Other than that, don't respond the the guy/gal. Turn him in and have his post deleted. No sense in gratifying the troll with so much attention.
There...I've had my say. Could someone pass the hawg jawls? They sound mighty tasty. |

Ramps are a small wild onion with a particulary strong odor. No, a very strong odor. Waynesville, NC is considered the ramp capital of the world! They are indigenous to the mountains of NC, and grow wild.
I am trying to find a link that will explain it better.

Thanks for the info. That sounds like something that would go great with cornbread. |

Blood Pudding, lol. We call it "pigs pudding", but yes it is made from congealed Pigs Blood and fat then wrapped into a sausage shape. Lovely.

There is an array of unique food celebrations such as the unusual "Ramp Festival" in Waynesville. Unsuspecting tourists should be forewarned: the ramp is a strong-tasting vegetable comparable to both garlic and onion. (taken from www.visitnc.com)
Comparable to both garlic and onion? That is an understatement. In May, every school usually has a least one student sent home for smelling like ramps. :-)Yes, it is good with cornbread, and also scrambled eggs. A guy that works with my husband (currently the 2002 Ramp King) says that the first time he ate a bunch of them, he almost felt like he was high. Go figure.

I don't care if you're southern or northen or racist or english. If you eat part of a pig's face, that's just disgusting. By the way, Virginia is not in the south, not any more.

When all of a sudden did it become chic to be southern. I remember almost once a week I hear that the south is getting another monument tore down and another person is getting "laid off" for sporting a rebel flag.
When did it become cool to be southern - I must have been sleeping? |

Well, here's the thing. Both of them are plural. "All y'all" means a group of 8 or more.

Poke salad is made from the leaves of pokeberry bushes (You know those bright reddish purple berries that grow in the fall that you were told never to eat). You can only use it, though, in the early spring. If you wait until too long to dig it, it is toxic.

Jsut for the record, any state north of you is northern. Va. is a northern state to me, NC is northern to SC. The only exception is Florida. It actually fits up in the Great Lakes Region. (Just kidding!)

I don't know if it is cool to be Southern. I just know I am what I am. I believe we should all be proud of our heritage whatever it may be. What monuments are getting torn down in the South? I also have never heard of anyone getting laid off or fired for wearing the rebel flag. Sent home to change maybe but not fired. Give me some actual facts not hearsay. Even if they were true, why do you think that is the norm? We are just as educated and cultured as anyone else in our great country. |

Sure, search any news site, like CNN: //www.cnn.com/2002/US/01/20/naacp.protest/index.html //www.cnn.com/2001/ALLPOLITICS/04/17/mississippi.flag/index.html //www.cnn.com/2001/ALLPOLITICS/stories/01/31/ga.flag.01/index.html //www.cnn.com/2000/US/07/01/scflag.02/index.html //more.abcnews.go.com/sections/politics/dailynews/texasplaques000612.html //more.abcnews.go.com/sections/us/dailynews/confederate-bbq000912.html
I don't want to challenge anyone's heritage. Only asking why so many people are so behind southern cooking and against the southern ideas? |

Well, not the DC area anyway.
Of course, I've always thought that South Florida is Northern Florida, and North Florida... well that's Southern Florida. When y'all git to Talahassee, well that's about as South as you can git.

Tallahassee - It's not so southern by the campus but I know what you're talking about when you start gettin to HWY 20. Those folks from Killearn speak w/ a northern accent though when they're sleeping.

Can you tell me where you are trying to take this? We were talking about food and prejudice and getting along great. Southern ideas can be so many different things. If I asked someone about Norhern ideas, they wouldn't know what I was talking about either. If you think that Southern Ideas means standing up for slavery, racial oppression, and hatred for the rest of the country then it's like I said, "Why would you think that is the norm?" I can still be proud of my heritage without condoning what my ancestors did.
I have to get back to work. Have fun and ya'll take some of this food home with you. I don't want to have to feed it to the dogs.
