I have been looking at some camera bodies to replace my 1Ds when I sell it and I am not looking foreward to losing any features, resolution quality or speed. Is this just a stupid quest or is there something out there that I haven't heard of that will fit the bill?

I mean besides the 1Ds Mark II.
What I really mean is anything but a Canon.

How much are you selling it for? And why would want anything other than what you have right now?

No Canon service available. (see this thread)
If I can somehow persuade Canon to honor their warrenty and clean and calibrate my 1Ds I will sell it for about $4500. That would be a $2700 loss just on the body. I expect I will lose at least $2000 more if I sell the lenses to switch to another system.
Price is not the object. Quality is everything.

If that's the case, why not a Leaf medium format back?

That's an excellent idea actually. Also, get a high end film scanner and the problem is solved.

I'm sure the service department is much better for that camera.

35mm. Something I can carry without dragging around a tether.

I don't just need service. I also need the camera.

I sent you a PM, but I would recommend the mamiya that is coming out, with lens and digital back for about 15,000 (not sure if CND or USD) |

I love my Kodak. It's 13.7 mp, comes with Nikon or Cannon mounts. I think the quality of the pictures are excellent in good light. I don't think the quality is quite up to the Cannon, esp at high iso, but I've been very happy with the pictures I've gotton from it. Best of all, their service is incredible. I've sent it in twice, once for an upgrade, and once when I was dumb enough to shoot in a hurricane and got the inside all cruded up when I changed lenses. Anyway, they were prompt and flawless with their service. They didn't even charge me for the cleaning. |

Film quality does not equal the 11Mp 1Ds when it is working right so how can the best scanner in the world improve on something that is not there?

If you want to get away from Canon (Camera Body), than I would suggest looking into the Kodak DCS Pro SLR/c. They have a Canon lens mount. It does not compare to the Canon 1Ds, features wise, but if you don't want to lose money on the lenses. It's the best way to go
Kodak DCS Review
When I purchased my Canon 20D from Best Buy, I purchased the 4 year warranty with it. So anytime something goes wrong, I can bring it in and they will replace it.
I actually got the 20D when i brought in my 300D for repair, I spoke to the manager and he gave me full credit for the 300D and I got the 20D. The funny thing is that all the manager wanted to know was if I purchased the extended warranty. I guess that's where the real profit is.
Best Buy does charge a little more for their equipment, but for a $1400 camera the extra $150 for the warranty was worth it for peace of mind for the next 4 years!!.

The DCSn body is much higher quality then the DCSc. I think some of the DCSc features are designed by Sigma, where as the DCSn uses Nikon parts. At high ISO, say 800, there is a considerable difference in image quality between the 1Ds and the DCS. I have still been considering this body in spite of the ISO factor.

Can you just buy the eos 1ds mk II from say ritz or something and buy the optional warranty? Then if something goes wrong, bring it there and they replace it free no matter what...sounds like a winner to me. I realize it's probably 5% higher at ritz than at other places you might know and the warranty might be $100 or $200 more, but you said price isn't an object, quality is -- there's no better quality than being assured a free replacement if something goes wrong -- in my eyes.

Did you bother to read the whole thread? If Canon service is inadequate with the 1Ds how is it going to be different for the 1Ds Mark II? Different set of ignorant tech monkeys?

I was going to recommend the Mamiya too but I think that's going to be really, really expensive. The other thing too is that the sensor is quite a bit larger than the 35mm, and you're going to lose a lot in terms of range on the lenses. There aren't all that many either.
If you have the 11 MP Canon and are truly fed up with that company, Nikon has the new D2X which is 12.4 or something like that. |

I might suggest that you not call them ignorant tech monkies if you are trying to get them to repair your camera. :)
I haven't seen images out of the D2X, but that would obviously be the logical direction to go if you are truly that upset with Canon.

Where did that come from! Awesome!
Too bad it's not an option. If I only shot studio or general outdoor shots I would definatly consider it. No long lenses, slow shoot rate and limited ISO sensitivity.

If they ever would come out with the thing it might be a serious consideration. I still have a few good D lenses left from before I switched to Canon. I have two one man shows opening in April of which I have not yet completed shooting so I would like to get something this week.
As far as the tech monkey thing, I don't see how the sevice could get worse.

This is not helping. The price is not the problem either. I want to be able to do close to what I can do with the 1Ds when it works.
