I am thinking of getting one of the Pentax ist ds. Does anyone on line have one? What do you like and dislike about it?

If you have already done so, check out one of the many reviews.

Well I bought one a few weeks ago - I think it's terrific. I got it with a sigma 18-125 lens (which provides great range) for 50 bucks less than I could find a digital rebel with only the kit lens.
What I like about it - it's a dSLR for starters - the lack of shutter lag, speed and extra flexibility are a godsend for me. Also it's really light - I walked around this arfternoon for a full hour with it around my neck without any discomfort. The burst mode is pretty cool - 9 frames in 3 seconds, though you either have to manually focus, live with the first focus point, or put it in sports mode if you want to continually focus. Another cool feature is the bulb mode, something I was surprised to see on what is clearly the cheapest new dSLR I could find. On the down side I'm not really sure why the ISO can't be set lower than 200. This hasn't caused me any problems yet, the shots are still noise free but it does surprise me.
Overall it's really easy to use, and the images it produces are great. As a bit of a yardstick, the light challenge will be the third I have entered with this camera, and so far the combined score of those three shots is about 6.25.

I've had mine since early December. The perfect entry level dslr for mine and I can't imagine any casual/enthusiast photographer outgrowing it until technology advances make it necessary.
Check the forums here if you want to ask a broader bunch of users.
As an aside, the lowest ISO200 on the *Ist DS is a property/feature of the Sony CCD which is the same one used in the Nikon D70.
Cheers,
bazz. |

Hehehehe... well if I don't then I'm returning the camera and buying a camera phone instead - the extra 5.5 million pixels obviously aren't helping.

I'll be buying the *ist Ds by the end of May at the latest myself.
I absolutely *CANNOT* wait!
I already have three lenses for it from my Pentax 35mm SLR too.. as well as a brand new flash unit with a Pentax mount.

Well, Artyste ... I'll second that! I absolutely cannot wait until you get your *ist DS so I can bombard you with PMs asking you for tips :-)
You have an awesome portfolio with your Fujifilm FinePix - CAN'T WAIT to see the your shots with the *ist. |

Hehehe, let the battle for the top of the *istDS leaderboard begin! I don't like the sound of these three lenses though - strikes me as an unfair headstart :P. |

Lol.. you mightn't worry.. they're not spectacular lenses.. the Sigma 70-300 f4/5.4 Super Macro 2 AF, a Pentax A 50mm f/1.7 and a Pentax A 28mm f/2.8
a nice range.. but the 28mm loses it's wide angle-ness because of crop factor, so I'd really like to get my hands on a 17-40 or something similar. (or lower.. 10mm anyone? ;))
