I am going to get this lens in january (don´t have the time now before christmas) but most reviews online mention it being soft, especially the edges.

I already have the 24-70 2.8 so there are 2 reasons why I am looking at this lens. First, I sometimes need a bigger aperature, as a matter of fact I will probably be using this lens 99% of the time at f1.8-f4. Secondly, sometimes I feel the need to go as light as possible and while the size and weight of the 24-70 doesn´t bother me a lot, sometimes it´s better to have just one prime and go light.

My question really is how good is it wide open, I also have the 50mm 1.8 and if it´s similar or slightly worse I am ok, but if it´s MUCH worse I don´t know what to do, I definately can afford the 24mm 1.4L but I seriously don´t want to buy that lens unless it´s day and night compared to the 28mm 1.8, I´d much rather spend my money towards something else.

Thanx in advance for your help.

(edit: corrected spelling)

NOBODY has the 28mm 1.8? Common, I won´t believe not one of you has this lens, anyway I could use some advice. Thx in advance.

I don't have this lens, but I've heard it's amazing. I've had the pleasure of trying it at B&H, it was faster then I expected, and excellent prime. Maybe 2005 will be the year I add it to my lens collection. :-)

Rather than start a new thread I thought I would just attempt a revival of this one.

I am considering the Canon 28mm F/1.8 to get something that approximates the 50mm F/1.8 on a 1:1 body. This is the closest I could find at a 44.8mm equivalent on the 20D. I own a 17-40mm F/4 already but am still considering this lens because it is lightweight, compact, and very fast.

Does anyone have any firsthand experience with this lens, especially in terms of sharpness? I am in the process of doing the usual Internet searches for reviews and feedback and always value the responses here.

Thanks!

Edit: I am also interested, although a little less so, in the 35mm F/2. It's a little long at 56mm but it also costs about half as much. I would be interested in feedback on that as well. Thanks again!

I've considered both lenses and after trying them both in the store, I can say that the 28mm f1.8 is much better. Faster focusing, quieter too. Plus I like the wider FOV with the 28mm.

Were you able to sample any captures taken to evaluate sharpness? I would definitely tend to lean toward the 28mm myself for the slight speed advantage but more importantly the wider FOV.
