I recently moved up to a rebel and need a better/bigger bag to carry my every growing array of stuff.

I am thinking Lowepro Mini Classic (big enough and affordable) but the Tamrac bags look to be more organized (more pockets, etc).

I can find no where to look at anything locally - all they have is little shoulder bags and i did see a microtrekker 200 (a tad small maybe).

Here is my list of contents (i don't have it all yet...)
Rebel w/ lens
2 or 3 other lenses
2 flashes and some accessories (batteries, diffusers, little softbox cover)
spare camera battery
Cokin P filter kist and adapters, 4 filters or so
lens cleaning stuff
a few papers/white card/etc
the camera's cables to TV/USB, remote shutter release
a spare body or lens cap
option of hanging a tripod on the bag (unless somebody knows a better idea)
memory cards
and perhaps spare space for when i travel - for the camera and flash battery chargers.

Yes, I am a pack rat - i know if it ain't with me i'll need it. I do some hiking and biking, hence the thought of a backpack to make it easier to drag it all with me but make it easy to carry.

I have seen non-photo backpacks in use by some people - how does one partition it to protect the camera and lenses?

Is a small bag or the lowepro with the add on little items teh better way to go? I hate to go digging for something - i like it all accessible.

And yes, if i want the bag sometime this decade, then it will have to be as inexpensive as possible. Under $100, preferably under $80.

Tenba makes some nice backpacks. I bought a DB15C for my recent trip to the Yucatan. It holds all of my camera gear (except studio lighting equipment ), plus a laptop with all of its gear (power converter, mouse, etc.) It's well made and I really like it, but it's damn heavy when fully loaded. It cost me $214 US new.

I have the Tamrac Expedition 5 and am very pleased with it. Would take all your gear for sure and would leave you some room to grow. You may also want to consider the Tamrac Expedition 4.

I have a Tamrac pro9 that I like really much. I havn't been kind to it at all. It has been in the rain, mud and snow. I have carried very long distances. It is still not worn out, in fact it looks quite new. And it goes as carry on baggage on airplanes.

This is what I normally have in it:

Canon D60 w/ lens
Canon D300 rebel w/ lens
Telelens 100-400 (the heavy version)
one more lens depending on assingnement
One laptop
laptop charger
5 spare batteries
Battery charger
2 flashes w/ batteries and diffusers
A few filters
Loads of memory cards
instruction books
lens cleaning equipment
PDA
some office stuff (pen, paper etc.)
Spare harddrive
CDs and DVDs

And if I travel I also have:

A book
spare batteries to the laptop
and some bathroom stuff.

As you might have guessed the bag is quite heavy. But it is not uncomfortable to carry.

However, I think it costs more then $100.

I have the Lowepro Computrekker AW. I was going to sell it on ebay. It's almost like new. I'm selling it basically because I don't like working out of a backpack. Even if you don't carry a laptop, the straps are much nicer on this version vs the similarly sized non-laptop model.

Lowe Computrekker AW

$90 plus shipping via UPS.

PM me if you're interested.

I have a Lowepro Mini Trekker Classic and I'm very happy with it indeed. I have carried 2 SLR bodies, 4 lenses, more film than is sensible, all my travel documents, a good book for the plane, my sunglasses, spare glasses, tissues, hairbrush, hand cream, snacks and god knows what else in one on a number of occasions.

Husband then bought the Micro Trekker 200.

When we travel together (which we usually do) we'll usually take both, split the equipment (and non camera stuff) across both bags as best it will fit and then swap things around on each day of the holiday so we're just taking one bag out of the hotel with us.

For our recent trip we were a little paranoid about the water and opted to buy the Lowepro Dryzone 100 which is of a similar internal dimension to the Mini Trekker. It is certainly harder to access the contents but that's the trade off for 100% waterproof and it was worth it to us for that trip. I wouldn't recommend this one as a regular use bag but it's a good choice for those times where the bag might get wet wet wet!

Same here - great for travel. I would still like a better bag for general hiking when I am not carrying a laptop, but it does pretty well in that capacity for now. And it is excellent for travel; fits nicely under the seat or in an overhead compartment.

They make all these wonderful, functional bags that hold everything you'd ever want to take along with you, but my question is this...

Why can't they make one that is CUTE and maybe even more FEMININE for the fairer sex???? ;o)

Sorry for the thread hijack, I just have been frustrated with my own current bag search. le sigh

Spray paint one pink and put it in the current challenge.

I have one of these and wouldn't trade it for anything. I paid $125 for mine. Really protects my equipment from impact, moisture and dirt. I go in the swamp with mine, carry it on planes, lug it around behind the seat of my truck and my dirty little bichon sleeps on it. When I open it up my camera and lenses are always clean and dust free.

It's a great bag and I'm selling it more out of personal preference for a shoulder bag than anything else. I simply find it difficult/impossible to access the contents while wearing it. I have to lay it down or take it off and hang it from a tree. Others obviously prefer backpack style bags.

I have the tamrac expedition 5, it's a great bag if you only have one camera. I however also shoot film and have that camera in the bag also. With carrying, filters, batteries, film and all the other accessories, I found that I ran out of room fast.

I've got a Lowepro Minitrekker AW and it is great. Camera, 4 lenses, flash and lots of other goodies, including my laptop and camcorder. It's an all in one bag for all that kit, but its not too huge a bag, either for carry on on a plane (as long as they don't weigh it!) or for everyday use.

£90 is rip off UK - most likely $90 in US (£50).
