Photons
this was to be my entry in the "light" challenge
I spent about 3 hrs trying to get this shot right (plus 2 hrs setup)
I used the filters that I made out of cellophane
and used a flashlight to burn each color over a 16 sec exposure
the red was about 3 secs, blue about 5 secs and the green 8 secs to try and get the colors even
there were lots of trails that finished to short or were way over exposed at the marble end so that parts blew out to white
I stopped at 1.30am as I had to get up for work at 4.00am
this is the best one but when I started to edit it I found the I couldn't get the red marble to focus I think I should have used the yellow/orange filter I made instead of the red
this is just a straight crop with no editing
I think my score would suffer from the lack of focus and the noise in the shot so I sat this one out :(

I didn't enter it. It had no other interest only the rays.

What I entered:
(it bombed)
outtakes:
Presumably I made the "wrong" decision again, but from my personal perspective the actual entry is one of the best pictures I've taken in the past year. Evidently, photographing "the dark side of light", making an "ominous" light picture, wasn't the way to go. I was really surprised by how few comments this picture drew.

I have a few outtakes from the light challenge that I'd like to share.
First my entry, this was my highest scoring entry to date and I'm quite proud of it finishing in 7th place alongside photos and photogs that I admire.
My entry.
This is my 1st outtake, but I felt that the light was to bright.
My 2nd outtake, camera just above the sand on the tripod.
My 3rd outtake, I like this one as it shows the colour of the dawn just syarting on the left.
My 4th outtake.
This one I took with the "Dreamland" project in mind as I believed it needed to be in the water as he arrived (Tripod mounted in the water). Will also post this one in that thread.
My 5th, the sunset the day before.
Comments always welcome
Bob

I think this one is far better then the one you entered. The corridor photo is more dramatic, has more depth and very nice light. The dusk photo appears flat and the horizon is abit tilted. |

One of my outtakes, I was going to submit this one but in my Three Challenge I had too many distracting items and I think that hurt my entry. I played it safe with this one and didn't enter it. For my actually submission for the first time I used '*' as the title, I was actually going to call it 'So, One Light bulb said to the other...'

I agree. The corridor picture is so much better then the picture you eventually entered.
There were so many dusk photos that IMO yours just got lost among then. It was not unique enough to stand out.
The corridor, on the other hand is so much more interesting and dramatic and unique! In any way, you didn't finish bad enough to be sorry, did you? :-)

Actually, I like your entry in terms of form, color, and even detail. The only thing that seems to weaken it is the straight center composition and a pretty straight icicle. Although your score wasn't really a bomb, you could play with alternative presentations such as cropping tighter and display only a portion of the ice. Another possibility, there's some interesting detail in the ice, almost a landscape--might be interesting to rotate 90 and present the "landscape" through the ice. --Regards, Neil |
