I am looking for good model/portrait books and was wondering if anyone has this book or has others that they like.

I searched the forums and i found some nude photography books, but that isn't what I want.

I know there are many books available, althuogh amazon doesn't ghave reviews on a lot of them. I guess I want something that is good for an am photographer, so not something to technical. (A lot i have noticed are designed for people with proper studios which i don't have, which is why i want something a little similar).

I have this book and have been recommending it like crazy in the forums. This focuses on the light setups, and ranges from single light setups to multi-light setups. The book will show a photo and then break down the lighting for that photo.

I really like this book. Took this series based on some of the examples.

(Nb Pbase seems to be getting upgraded just now, so the links may or may not work)

Thank you as well. I admire your work so I trust your judgement. :)

i have it, and it is wonderful for learning the physical lighting set-ups. although i mainly get my ideas from studying the photography in magazines...such as W, vogue, surface...heck, any of the edgier magazines especially have wonderful photography/lighting ideas.

You might wanna check the Amherst Media series of books. Most topics/techniques are explained well with examples.

It is amazing how much you can tell about the lighting once you start really looking. Eyeballs in particular can show a whole lot about set-up.
The 'wrinkle free' cream ads are particularly interesting to see - soft boxes top, bottom, left and right :)

Some of the book is 'useable' with just a window and maybe a reflector, quite a lot of the images would require at least one studio type light and some use about 9 strobes (!)

Yeah thanks for that. I don't have a lighting setup at all really, so I guess that really answers my initial question. I probably need books that are designed for people that don't necessarily have all of the expensive equipment, although I think most are designed for people that do.

Just looking up lighting today at alienbees. it would cost me $US830 to get a kit shipped to Australia, which is far more than I could possibe afford.

Perhaps you might like Faces, by Jane Brown

I think the review is pretty spot on and I read my copy every now and then. Not so much a how-to book though.

Thanks Gordon, that probably actually is a good book for me. I really do need more ideas for models than anything. I am buying some other lighting book which should help me at the other end anyway :)
