Strange problem. Just got a Mac iBook and when I try to import photos taken on my Nikon D70 that are stored on my Windows computer (via wireless network) into iPhoto I get an error message that says the files or of a format that cannot be opened by iPhoto, or the file is corrupt.

I have no problems opening files that were taken on a Nikon 5700 or 950, but none of the D70 jpgs will open in iPhoto. Any ideas?

Are the file names appended by ".jpg" or ".raw"?

Have you tried to import them indirectly, i.e. to a location on the Mac HD, say, the desktop, and then dragged and dropped them into iPhoto's library window. It's best not to touch the app's library folder...

i would imagine the D70 files are much larger. try to put some of the images on a disk then transfer them to isolate a networking problem.

i have also heard (on this site i believe) that iPhoto does not read RAW files

iPhoto 5 does read RAW files. Prior versions do not.

some image processing suites convert RAW files to TIFFs. TIFFs have different encodings for different platforms.

If they were encoding on a Windows platform, they may not be compatible on a Mac.

iPhoto reads TIFFs as well, no matter what platform they were converted on. I use and read them merrily, all of the time.

They are jpgs, not raw files. I'm using the new version of iPhoto and the files are large, but I wouldn't have thought it would be an issue of size. I'm going to try putting some photos on iPhoto direct from the camera. Thanks for the suggestions.

I've managed to transfer the files to the iBook sucessfully and now they open in the Preview program, but they still won't open in iPhoto. When I try to import them into the Library nothing happens but I get an error message saying it is an unrecognized file type. This is the latest version of iPhoto (2005) so perhaps there is a bug? The files are about 2meg jpegs. Haven't seen anything else about it anywhere online. Perhaps I should have just stuck with Windows!

i just got a powerbook and my photos (.nef and .jpg) from my d70 open in iPhoto, it might just be a bug or something. As for saying you should have stuck with windows...I think you'll warm up to your new OS soon enough.

try downloading and/or reloading the program
take iPhoto out of the Applications folder and hit the Software Update under the Apple. Sometimes it will then sow you need to update iPhoto and can download it again. If not you can go to your OS HD/Library/Reciepts and take iPhoto out of there and then it SHOULD dl iPhoto when you go to Software Update.

IPhoto 5 is so new it's not even available yet in stores outside the US. Updates to it will also not be available yet via Software Update. Follow this link to read more.

If you decide to re-install the app, you need to do this via the system or a separate iLife CD. Downloading won't work.
