This is something that I know a little bit about. I just got my 20d so I don't have any decent photos from the poppies, and wouldn't dare show any snapshots from last year with the S50. I've been going there for 9 years now every year. The last 2 years there haven't been much at the reserve, but about 500 feet past the entrance across the street there was a field with quite a few. We have the start of a great poppy season, cold freezing temperatures and LOTS of rain. There are lots of variables to having a good season, and hopfully we will get more rain again to keep them growing. If not they might dry out before peak bloom. Here's a link to their (non-updated site):null
There is a "Poppy Festival" every year in Lancaster, 15 miles east of the reserve. This year it's the 16th and 17th. It's a carnival with fine art/craft booths, farmers market, food, and even free buses that take you to the reserve. They have a wildflower photo contest too, but I'm not sure how to join as I don't have any yet. Here's an info line: (661) 723-6077. Just an added bonus, if any of you are Juice Newton fans (and for the record I'M NOT) she is playing there on Saturday as well as "Classic Rock All Stars." Here's a link to the festivals very small website:\ //www.poppyfestival.com/
The farm that Eric showed those great photos of is really cool, and on both sides of the street there are photo ops galore! Have fun, maybe I'll be up there that day.

Wow, you've got some great captures -- fantastic composition and colors.
Here's my favorite of your shots:

The farm is about 1/2 a mile from the entrance to the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve. As I entered the farm there was an old man with his 4 barking dogs. I introduced myself and asked if it was O.K. to photograph the property. He said go right ahead. Here are some photos of the farm.
Your not going to believe this but the poppies are already blooming! These are the photos I took today after I was done photographing the farm. |

Eric & everyone else, what's your availability? We could always go twice, but I am not driving both times, so I'd need to carpool :)

I wanted to bump this because I really want to know if you all would rather do march, april or both? I am all for moving it to March due to the reports that the rains should create amazing blooms by then, but April may start dryiing them out already. I don't know though. What does everyone think?

Glad you bumped it. I didn't see it first time around. Yes, I was also getting uneasy about the April date. So, pick a date, and I'll see if I can come then...

I think early March would be best, but that's because of all the greenery I see day to day in my area. I'd like to see (of the dates I listed) which are the most preferable to the people who might join us.
Alice, do you have a preference? PS. You may want to watch the thread or 'email replies'

That sounds like fun, I'd like to go and learn from some of you pros. I'll probably go by myself and try to meet up with everyone, my sister lives in Acton and just had a baby so I'd stop by for a visit on the way home. |

I don't currently have plans during March except for Easter which is the 27th of the month this year, so I'll go with whatever the majority wants. I'll call the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce as it gets closer to see how it's looking too.

I checked my calendar and can make it either the weekend of 5-6 or 12-13. (the other time, I'll spend at Joshua Trees Nat'l Park) I can't believe how beautiful it was there last year:
So let me know... I do have the thread on 'watch' but sometimes am away just long enough for it to disappear on me :>(
See ya,

The best date for us is March 12th, so we can aim for that if everyone else is in agreement.
What do you all think?
