Using the Canon Remote, I took a few photos of myself in my studio. This one had the most interesting lighting, tell me what you think!
Taken with white bedsheet backdrop (so much cheaper...), 2 Photogenic Lights with 3 1/2 foot umbrellas, Digital Rebel on tripod. Used Remote.
Wasn't really going for anything in particular, I didn't crop it even. Just looking for comments. |

Do you have a picture of the lighting? I would love to see it.
Great shot! May be a bit bright in a few areas, but not to bad. |

The electrical impulse from the strobes is causing your hair to stand up.

Sonifo,
you think he was looking for a comment on the PHOTO? My bad... I thought he was showing his studly looks off...
:-)
The photo's nice and clean. Not much more to say. Clean umbrella lighting, nothing magical.

I don't have a picture, but I was standing about 10 feet in from of my camera, 50 mm. One umbrella set at 1/3rd power was to the camera's right, my left. Other umbrella about 4 feet to my right, a little to the back. Hope that makes sense. |

The lighting is good and clean, and despite what folks are saying your hair looks fine. :-).
I think you need to have a bit more space between yourself and the backdrop, so it is more out of focus, the texture is showing in places and it could be distracting. Either that or a wider apeture, I'm not sure of the size of the room etc..
Cutting off your hands, but showing all of your arms is a little annoying for me, but that's a personal taste thing...
Thanks for sharing...
Cheers, Chris H.

Hard to tell if my hands will be cut off when I'm on the wrong side of the camera. I think I was about 4 feet in front of the backdrop, but then my camera was at F8, and the lights were at 1/4th power. I suppose I could've dropped that to F5.6 at 1/8th power. Thanks for the comment. |

Great lighting. You've got some talent happening :-) |

I think your lighting looks pretty good, depending on what you were after. The left side of your face is a little bright, and shadowed on the right. You might turn the key light down a bit and the fill light up a bit. Just don't get them too even or it could end up looking flat.

If I'm not mistaken, that's what he was going for. IMHO standard lighting is boring. |

I have 2 14 year olds, they have taught me over the past few years that a hairstyle has nothing to do with who you are. I've also found that commenting on a younger persons hair is quite upsetting to them, it attacks their individuality, which they hold sacred...
Now for the photo!! I think its GREAT! I love the lighting, the pose, the overall look. The only negative comment I can make is that the sheet is a little wrinkled, but nothing that wouldn't clean up with a little cloning in PS. This would be a great present to print and give to your parents :o)

Like I said, it depends on what he's after. The photo looks like to me like he was trying for standard portrait lighting. It may be boring to you, but a lot of people want that look (hence the term 'standard'), and it can be difficult to achieve without experience.

As I said, I wasn't going for anything in particular, but this one stood out of the bunch because the lighting was so unique. |

When messing around with self portraits, nick a portable TV from your brother/mother/child/flatmates/partner and plug it into the TV out on the camera. Stick it behind the camera so you can see the preview image.
As it happens this can be a good idea for normal portraits as well. If you're trying to convince someone that a particular pose or lighting does look neat, not tacky/silly, a TV to review shots on is handy.. Maybe not live, but after a set of 10-20 shots you can plug in and show them what you've been seeing. It's easier to talk about it when it's a 20" TV and the 1.8 " LCD that you have to squint at. Also the model/victum dosn't have to get up from their 'pose' to chimp...
(note: I said '_can_' be a good idea, some people hate seeing themselves on a screen, even if they did commision the portrait.. You only make that mistake once, so caution can be advisable... :-) )
Cheers, Chris H.

I had my camera connected to a 27" CRT, but the pictures were sideways. That's ok. I'm not gonna retake, I doubt I could remember exactly how I had the lights.
So when are they gonna come out with an SLR camera with live preview? Seems like they should be able to put a 640x480 sensor inside just for live preview, would that be so hard? |

did you retake this yet? Or are you? I would love to see what you come up with. |

A reflector of some sort might help with the dark part of your face. If you wanted to add drama by having that dark, you might want to find a way to keep the 2nd light from spilling onto that side of your face. Just my 2 cents.
BTW, your hair is fine.

I especially like the light on both sides of my face. Unique lighting is exactly what caught my eye when I picked it out of the dozen or so. |

Plexxoid, first let me say you is a first class youth and handeled the smart a** responses very well.
I liked the photo a lot as far as the pose and framing go and the lighting is good too. I would have liked the right side of your face a bit more lit though but that is just my opn.
yeah, what Spazmo said
