I was torn between 2 pics to enter for Breaking New Ground... This one lost it by a roll of a dice.

What have you done that constitutes, " Breaking New Ground" ?

I nearly entered this shot:

but at the end of the day there is nothing really ground breaking about it

Ok so lets look at what we do have. A Castle taken at Twilight (or sunrise) with uplighting, Pitched against a graduated backgroung of mauve through pink and ending in Yellow.

All achieved useing basic edit.

The Background must be the effect you worked upon.
This obvious answer would be some form of graduated filter when the sky still had some blue in it.... anything else and you have done well...

I would say it's a very long night exposure which was near pitch black or perhaps hand held night shot at ISO 1800 or something like that?

I really think to score well it has to be obvious how your photograph shows a groundbreaking technique

As far as the challenge goes, I couln't agree more.
It relly doesn't matter how inovative or startling the technique is, unless it makes the viewer think... I wonder how they did that....

Then it will do well in the Challenge..

All photographers are at different levels the part of breaking new grounds for me was the fact i could purposely produce a shot like this using BASIC editing tools create the image that I personally was looking for its new grounds for my level and the fact that the entered shot is currently my best ever score to date it may just of worked. fingers crossed.

I didn't enter this challenge since I could not come up withan idea that would make the viewer do "Wow!" or "Huh?". It's as simple as that.
01/19/2005 06:57:03 AM · #10
well, at the outset of this challenge i was sure that it would be impossible for me to come up with anything that would wow me or anyone else. then i discovered this amazing new photographic technique! i call it "resting the camera on a car door while the engine is running." as amazing as it is, i just couldn't bring myself to enter it. so, for your viewing enjoyment, here it is...

Hmmm...I wonder just how many DQ requests will be generated by this challenge, considering that some 'groundbreaking' techniques could look quite outside the basic editing rules. Sometimes the patrons on this site seem to have a closed mind about technique, so this challenge could prove interesting.

EDIT: I had a tough time choosing which shot to post in the challenge, but like some of you, I can't post it here or it would give away my entry. Also, I reeeeeeeally need to buy a book on Photoshop.

I saw a tutorial on how to do this in the Feb 2005 issue of Popular Photography and Imaging. Glad to see that someone tried it out.

Covering my lens in a few layers of tape and splashes of water.

Long exposure spinning round on my desk chair in front of the computer, turning the camera to different angles.

This isn't really my "other" shot since I didn't enter the challenge, but oh well. I couldn't create anything groundbreaking, IMHO, that hadn't been created before. I tried some experimenting with long shutter speed, colored lights, and zooming during exposure and came up with this one. There are a couple of other takes hereas well.

It's interesting to see all the different techniques used in the entries. Good luck to all! :o)
