I was thinking of joining this website and wanted some input from current members on if it is beneficial. That is for someone that has just gotten into photography? Help....I'm ready to spend $25

The site is good.

Sorry.

I joined a while back. It is really nice to be able to enter in whichever challenge you please, rather than just the open ones. Also it is nice to be able to use advanced editing, as it can give your images a much cleaner look.

It's very competitive, but for the most part people are quite helpful.

There are a few incredibly talented photographers on this site, and many very good photographers. Most are willing to share their expertise and opinions freely. In my opinion, the $25 fee for entry is very much worth it.

This site can become very addicting once you have that "update" button.

Sounds like deapee forgot to take his meds this morning. ;-)

James, you'd be hard pressed to find a better investment than this site. It's the only paid site I've ever subscribed to. The focused nature of the challenges forces you to learn aspects of photography you may have never tried, and this is one of the most helpful online communities around. Post any question on any subject, and you'll get answers in minutes. The more you participate, the more you will benefit from the site- and the experience is priceless.

I've been a member here since mid-2002 (before paid membership was introduced). The $25 per year is possibly the best place you could spend $25 toward improving your photography. Yes, it is competitive, and no, you won't always agree with everyone, but then disagreement is a part of learning, is it not?

Best $25 I've ever spent.

I waited a long time before becoming a member. I really like having more challenges to choose from, the portfolio (although I don't need it), and all of the other features that come along with membership.

Yes, there are those that aren't very grateful but I believe you'll find that anywhere. Live with it.

I say sign-up. It's only 7 cents a day. If you aren't happy don't sign up again. It's not like you're really losing anything.

If nothing else, you're contributing to keep the site going. The forums are a wealth of information and viewing many of the images is inspirational.

It depends of curse exactly how much $25 is to you. For me, it is absolutely worth it, and I get from this place almost all I need to satisfy my photography habit.

It's also, as is rarely mentioned, one of the few forums I've ever found on the web that seems largely free of flamers and trolls - not completely of course, but where could you have that without severely restricting access? - but very largely.

I lurked for a while, then joined. I'm still in the process of deciding which camera I will upgrade to. I haven't submitted any photos for challenges yet, because I feel that with the camera I have I really can't compete. Nevertheless, I'm totally addicted and have learned so much. Can't wait to get my new camera!! I think it was definitely worth the $25.

Agreed.

I joined at the beginning of the year after a few months testing the water as a registered user. I really like being able to enter any challenge I want and though I haven't uploaded anything yet, am excited about the portfolio too. I'm also happy to be able to support the site since it's been so valuable to me. In the three dimensional world, the only knowledgeable person I have to discuss photography with is very film oriented. He dabbles in digital occasionally (using my cameras) and does know photoshop pretty well, but it's still not quite the same knowledge that people here have of the digital side of things. It's great being able to pose questions and discuss things with a large group of digital photographers.

Let me put this into a real-world perspective. I came across this site less than a year ago. I thought I was pretty good with photography, but in reality I was a rank amateur. I rarely strayed from the Auto setting on my Powershot G2, and never heard of the Rule of Thirds or an L lens. Now, $25 and 11 months later, I can confidently use every button and setting on my DSLR, and we're setting up a full-fledged professional photo studio at my office that will nearly eliminate outside photography expenses. Guess who's the professional? ;-D

I joined this site only a month ago. For me the transition from registered user to a member took all of three days. The site is awesome, people are increadibly friendly and helpful, and being able to participate in all of its challenges and other activities is worth$25/yr (for me, at least) many times over.

That button is worth the $25 on it's own!

This is the only site I pay for online, and it's worth every penny!

Thanks for all the help. I think I will subscribe. I have read a lot on this website the past week and it seems most everybody is helpful. Of course there are always bad apples in every bunch that tries to make everybody feel inferior but I am sure now that the good ones outweigh the bad ones on this website. I will subscribe because I am looking to better myself in photography. I am also looking to use all the features of my camera and not just the "auto" function.

I wouldn't know but from what I see it is not the camera but the photographer.

Peer pressure must have done him in. He's a "blue shirt" now.

Congrats James, and welcome.

Blue looks good on you - Congrats on a great decision! :-)
