I know it's early, but I wanted you all to put the dates in your calendar for the Antelope Valley Poppy Fields trip!

According to the site below, the best time to go is within the first two weeks of April. So, my suggestion is that we try for the first weekend, and if the weather is bad, then go the following! So, I am putting both weekends in my calendar for now. 4/2, 4/3, 4/9 and 4/10 are the dates. Are Saturdays or Sundays best for you all?

Hmmm, I wonder if I can schedule business in the area around that time? I'll have to see, it is certainly within the realm of the possible.

That would be great! We'd love to go on an outing with you again!!!

Im there. IF you guys read my other post(Trip to La) you will see that is were I grew up. Right in the Antelope Valley,Lancaster/Palmdale area. I know of some really cool spots around the area of the poppie fields, including the Wild Cat Animal Reserve (A must see). I hope I do not appear rude by barging in on this post, t's just that I am very familiar with the area you guys are going to and I plan on attending the La DPC meet. I'll post later in the day with further info on the area and the best hours to see the poppies bloom. Talk to ya.

Aww man...I'm quite the busy bee in April. I'll be on a trip 2-5 (San Diego) and available the second weekend of April.

DDYJR, I have no problem with you providing info/insight to the poppy fields trip and encourage it! I am not familiar with that area at all and appeciate the help! :)

DDYJR, please give us any insight you can! Maybe we can see the poppies in the morning and the cat sanctuary in the afternoon!!!

Greg, cancel your trip!!! We're going on an outing :)

Seriously, Greg, we can try to go the 2nd weekend, but gotta check the weather. If it looks like the 1st weekend will be better, we may go that weekend instead. We'll keep an eye on it as it gets closer :)

Sound like fun. I think the poppy fields were are first socal trip planed last year but there was one big problem..THERE WERE NO POPPIES!

I'm sure with all of the rain this season the poppies will be in full bloom.

Count me in.

Sounds like a great trip! The second weekend would probably be out for me though as that is the weekend of my wife's birthday. But if that's the weekend that works for everyone, you should all go.

Greg:

Are you driving or flying to San Diego? If you're driving, I would suggest crossing the border and driving down the coast between Rosarito Beach and Ensenada... there are some great coastal photo ops there. If you want people, you might try Tijuana, Rosarito Beach and/or Ensenada... Ensenada is furthest south, but still only about an hour's drive from the border. I would love to get down there again myself without the family for some shooting.

Yes, we were void of poppies last year! So, I have been very excited about going this year and wanted to make sure you all had it on your calendars! I am sure that the rains will make an amazing display for us! Are there any other places we should visit in LA that would bloom due to the rains? I feel like we should make our Feb & March events centered around the rains' effects on LA. Any thoughts?

We'll I cannot make the April 2 weekend, or week, since I am getting married! And the honeymoon is that week.
Probably 4/10 I'll be back.
The rain will definately help the poppies, I am sure it will look better than last year, you can check my portfolio of last year's poppies.

I'm going to be out that way on the 8th/9th/10th.

Thinking about spending the weekend in Joshua Tree NP, but could make a detour for a day...

That would be great! The Poppy fields are about 1 hour north of LA if you don't mind the drive! You could carpool with us from LA if you want. Let us know :)

Just before you make it to the poppies, you'll see an old farm -- just off the highway -- with a bunch of old and rusting farming machines laying about. That's where I found these shots:

I've been hoping to make it out there for years now -- to shoot it right.

I'm thinking seriously about coming down to Antelope Valley and Joshua Trees this spring, and why not early April to try to meet up with the LA DPCers. Last year I came down in mid to late March and as elsewhere noted, the poppies weren't popping that year. However, Joshua Trees Nat'l Park was burgeoning with wildflowers(my allergies didn't quit for months!) and I had a wonderful time pointing my camera at everything that didn't move too fast.

Question is: should I plan for Joshua Trees first and Antelope Valley 2nd or???

Great, so if my plans firm up, I'll be in Lancaster/Palmdale around the 4/8-10 weekend.

I want to thank "bdobe" for his earlier post on this thread of his photos from the old farm. Today I decided to go check it out. The farm is about 1/2 a mile from the entrance to the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve. As I entered the farm there was an old man with his 4 barking dogs. I introduced myself and asked if it was O.K. to photograph the property. He said go right ahead. Here are some photos of the farm.

Your not going to believe this but the poppies are already blooming! These are the photos I took today after I was done photographing the farm.
