550 on the camera and the 420 on a stand

alright. that's my plan shortly.
for the money, seems like a decent set up of lights.
easier to meter than normal studio lights too.

got the 550ex recently. next pay out i'll get the 420 and the st-e2.

Using the 550 and the 420 together still require e-ttl flash metering, which is fine in most cases. You get a finer level of control over the flash with two 550ex units...

look in the back of 550ex manual for some basic info on set up.

It means you can't use the 550ex in it's manual mode in conjunction with the 420.

I have the 550 in the hot shoe and the 420 on a stand and set the 420 to slave anf the 550 to ETTL and shoot away wireless

ah i see - when do you find manual mode necessary?
you have exposure comp both with the flash heads, and the camera

i am aiming for two off camera lights - to the sides of subject - for instance.
