Hi All
Calling all brainy people
Can the following posters sizes be reproduced from a Nikon D70 Raw file for printing.
30x45
40x60
50x75

If so is the quality any good?

Has any body got any experience in printing posters from the net?

any responces whould be great as I want to offer poster prints for sale from my site?

Thanks

I believe that you can print these without much trouble. You will need to resample up to at least 150dpi at the listed sizes though. They won't be as high quality as you would expect a 4x6 print to be, but they will be acceptable for the sizes. Do you have a source for printing these sizes yet?

Are these sizes centimetres or inches?

yeah you can print that. you'll need a good exposure to start with of course, and a good interpolation to those sizes, at about 150 dpi. but you should be able to print that big without issue.

I assumed inches.. you can get those sizes in CM from DPCPrints.

Firstly your D70 should automaticaly be at 300dpi when you open in photoshop, so resampling is loosing quality..no?

Check it I may be wrong.

Also the best way to tell is to get a print done and look. I am not taking the p*&£ but that is really the only way. Pretty pointless asking anyone.

My D100 prints A3 very nice, but never gone bigger (yet)

Darren,

I use PhotoBox and they have excellent service and the quality is of top class.
I haven't printed posters but I have printed pretty big ones and I get the prints within in 2 - 3 working days.

edit: I actually don't think you need to resample. I think they would adjust the resolution for you. (Don't count on me on this one)

Yup I second that. PB rocks my world. Mine even come next day.

I ordered 30 7x5's and 3 A4's today and got a confirmation at 11:10 then postage confirmation at 1:00 Sweet turnaround for pennies.

Can you check your DPI in photoshop? I am interested to see if they are 300dpi

I pushed a photo out of my 602 up to 27x40 inches... it looks incredible....

Here's what I did in photoshop:

adjusted the image size by 110%, setting the resample to 'bicubic smoother'. I had to do this a couple of times to get the image upsized, but it came out really well. I took my file to Kinko's, but I'm sure there are better and cheaper services out there. My final print ran me about $85.00 USD.

Try using a program called "Genuine Fractals" by Lizardtech. I think it's about $140.00 from B&H. It uses different software to resize your image using fractal technology ( don't even ask me ) and it's supposed to be able to about double the size of your file with no loss of image quality at all ( or at least that's what I remember). So if you shoot a 17 MB file with the D70 ( tiff) you've suddenly got a 34 MB file that supposedly is just as clear. Then if you want to keep upsizing from there you can do it. Haven't tried it but I hear that's what a lot of printing houses use to get larger file sizes of the best quality. For $140 bucks, maybe it's a worth a try.

I've heard the same, but never tried it....

A 17mb file doubled in size will be about 68mb -- as it doubles in each dimension, data quadruples.

If you have the Bicubic Sharper/Bicubic Smoother options available, you supposedly don't need to enlarge in 5-10% increments anymore.

you know after reading these post and then going back to PSP8 i totaly forgot that you can resize UP^^^^^ what a div i am, i have been so used to sizing down i forgot abot going up.

After messing last night i resized a .Nef file up to 4000x3000 or something like that at 300dpi setting.

i would figure this would be fine to send over to photobox to print a poster from.

Thanks for the kick in the ass guys. LOL

Cheers

If it is a RAW you can adjust it in the RAW converter up to 6144x4085 PRIOR to going into the "program." I have messed with it a bit and it still looks great (no prints yet though.)
So that is roughly 20.5"x13.6" at 300dpi. times that by 2 at 150dpi. Then you can upsiaze some more in PS to see what happens. Remember what your viewing distance for those size of prints will be also, and what you think is acceptable from that distance. ie: billboards can have dots the size of your head, and still look very clear.
I have heard that Genuine Fractals is the best for this process, also. If you are wanting to get REAL big.

I never resize up or down - I decide my print size - then just crop it to the nearest ratio. Sometimes I loose a little, other times I have to scale it larger but only ever by 3%.

Is this loosing me detail? My prints come back super quality.?
