Hey all, I have been trying to find out how to get access to things like concerts, sporting events, plays, etc. Can anyone shed a ray of light on my problem?

Try searching the forums (always a good first step!) -- there have been several threads which go into this issue in detail.
You might try the keywords

I can't speak for concerts or plays, but I have some experience of sports events.. In the past when I've been shooting without credentials (IE. not for a magazine or by invitation), I've had success just contacting the event organisers, explaining I'm a freelance and that I'd like to cover the event for portfolio shots. In a couple of cases I've got in just on those grounds - being respectful and asking.
Other instances you can get in on the day, again, by asking. I'd try and steer away from trying to bluff your way in with a fake press pass or white lies. That's on easy way to annoy pros at the event.
Once you get in make sure you're careful not to get in anyone's way (particularly a pro with a job to do) and you should be fine.
Good luck, and show us the results! |

Some years ago I attended quite a few exhibitions and at the same time was writing for local newspapers as a freelance. The same would apply for photographers. Approach the event organisers and tell them you write/photograph for a newspaper...or go to the event and track down the press office...nine times out of ten they will issue a Press Pass on the spot for you.
Don't be too specific about the 'local' part, just quote the name of the paper. Good Luck, it's worth a try. |

Find a local newspaper and see if they need someone to cover events for them. Local/ free/ college newspapers are a good bet to start out. Show them a well put together portfolio that shows you know how to use a camera and have a professional approach and you might get lucky. Just remember you are asking to represent them - so you need to be someone they want using their name.
Lying your way in is a good way to get barred from everything - it is a continually amazingly small community in most cities.

Once anyone finds out you're lying, you'll be blacklisted so fast it'll make your head spin. |

You can try this place. I have been thinking of doing it myself. If you do, let me know how it went.

I wouldn't waste my money on a place like "Picture Stock Press Pass". There is only one proper way to gain access to events and that is by being associated with a publication and aquiring media credentials in advance of the event.
Good luck with it.

I'm just starting to shoot concerts. You gotta be "with" someone...I mean, you have to be with a paper or magazine, etc. They rarely give passes out to freelancers (I'm yet to hear of one actually). I have contacts with House of Blue (the largest concert promoter in the world) and that's what they keep telling me. So I volunteer for the university paper, that gets me into the gigs and I use the shots in my portfolio.
Good luck :-) |

If you were going to use this pass you would be better off simply printing up something on your own computer and laminating yourself. You could probably make it look more profesional.
My advice would be to go through the legal channels and find a publication sponser. If that means a lot of phhone calls and leg work, pay your dues.

Just looking at their site... Dosn't look like anyone has been home for a while, their sample magazine is spring 2003, and the site itself looks quite dated.. Are they an active organisation?
Just curious, I'm not interested in being a member... If i was looking to get event/press passes I'd be hitting the pavement/phones and pay my dues, as nsbca7 said.
Cheers, Me.
