Well I don̢۪t know, I am all in favor of the idea of Dark Sky but this seems like a pretty odd Petition. There is no affiliation or information about the organizers.
It is not even clear what is proposed, are to going to have one night a year where we turn off the street lights and such? Or is this just a night to somehow remember how nice a dark sky can be?
We take dark night skies very seriously here and it is not an easy thing.
Here are some people doing the kind of work that is needed, check them out.

um... let me follow up with the member in my Astronomy club who sent it out. Im not sure if it is 100% related to the IDA. I know there are a few people here in Houston who are hot on this topic and are doing things to preserve the night sky seperately from the IDA.

BTW if anyone wants to see some clear, dark night skies we get them here. The whole island has light pollution ordinances, we still get some city light but nothing like on the mainland. One of the amusing aspects to this is that all of our street lights are low pressure sodium, this is because low pressure sodium lights put out very pure light which is easy to filter out, but it also means that everything looks the same color under these lights. It is not uncommon for a tourist to park their car when it is still light out and then not be able to find it in the parking lot because it looks completely different under the sodium lights.
It is also warm enough here at night to stand outside and enjoy the night sky.
You can also see more of the sky here then most places in the world, we̢۪re closer to the equator.
And if you are really hardcore you can go up on the mountain and get incredibly clear skies., lots of people do this, not me it is way too cold up there.
Just don̢۪t expect to be able to see start on Oahu, that is another whole story.

| I've been an IDA member for many years and I passionately support their efforts to educate the masses about smart lighting solutions, etc. I don't think the petition idea is very sound. While it would be cool to see all the unnecessary outdoor lights turned off for a night, I'd rather see our energies and monies go to promoting intelligent use of shielded fixtures and well designed solutions for parking lots, etc. |

It'll be dark, just as soon as you pry the light switch from my cold dead fingers...
Well, not really. I used to live in teh dark area of the country, then an old folks home was built next door. Now i can read on my deck with out turning on a light.
Last time i went out into the country to see an astonomical event (august's meteor showers) the local famrmers (4 of 'em) showed up in pick ups with guns drawn.
Me, well, i'll be sleeping with the lights on.

Yes it would be a cool idea, but not sure how well the mass public will respond.
Last year in early 2004, the neighborhood where my parents live, and where some of my telescope obsering is done, was blessed with MORE street lights. The city just came in and doubled the amount of street lights currently in place.
Now I have a much harder time finding polaris.
