Don't you just open RAW files like you do any other file? It's always worked for me.

The only reason I can think of that PS-CS on a Mac wouldn't open RAW files is if the plugin is not installed. It should have been installed right from the CD but maybe not. Check your documentation or check Adobe's web help.

Ellamay, download the CS Raw plug-in at Adobe.com and drop it into your plug-ins folder.

Elements 3 does, I don't believe Elements 2 does. |

I don't have PS-CS, only PS7, but I can say that I had to go and install the file viewer utility software that came with my Rebel before I was able to edit any photos in PS. Took me forever to figure that out, why it hadn't been installed when the rest of the software was I have no idea. But it works now. PS-CS is probably different though as I think I read somewhere in a previous thread that it was able to open them. You might check out the Canon website to see if they have any updates or downloads that you might need. I was trying to find the other thread that was discussing this, but to no avail.

PS 7 had a $99 additional cost plug in.
PS-CS it is free, but you have to download it for many cameras.
Elements 3 I think has the raw downloadabel plug-in, but not sure about prior.

so can i import into canons software? And then view them in CS as normal?
Just seems like they are taking a VERY lomg time to import in there. 63 raw photos about an hour so far and still no photos |

That's way too long. Is the Canon software running some sort of adjustments on them? For what you want to do it seems like getting a firewire card reader would be the way to go. |

I'm still learning how to use the software, as I just found the software the other day. How I've been doing it is opening the raw files with the file viewer utility and making any changes to WB and exposure, then converting them to jpeg so that I can work with them in PS. This may be the completely wrong way to do it, but I'm just messing around until I find something that works.... I guess I should dig out the manual and read up on it, but who wants to do that? ;-)

I have no idea what it is doing, (besides making me want to throw it all out the window : )
I thought I was just importing, but there is no visible way to tell it is doing anything.
My idea was to import here and convert to j[g or tiff and work on them in PS
maybe I will just sacrifice the days shoot and try again tomorrow in jpg : ) |

An easy workaround is Irfanview, a free viewing utility, which will read all RAW files and can save them as TIFF files. That way you can get them into 'shop. But you can't edit in RAW mode, a definite problem for some.
Robt.

My recommendation if yu have Photoshop CS:
- Get a fast (firewire or USB2.0) card reader
- Move the files to an "archive" directory on your hdd, copy to a working directory.
- Open Photoshop CS, and point the file browser to the working directory. you should see all the thumbs, and double-clicking one should bring up the conversion window.

Kirbic has the right idea: copy everything to your hard drive first, then use File Browser in CS to view the thumbnails and open only the ones you want. |

ok I am viewing the shots now. they are all in a folder on my desktop.
So I have imported so to speak.
I would now like to burn my originals before I do any editing.
So if I burn the folder with the files will they and the exif data be there? Or do I need to individually save every shot and then burn(praying this is not the case : )

You will burn the folder and its contents to a CD, that process does not change anything about the files. It's just a copy of the files on CD.
The individual RAW files contain all the info, burning them to CD or DVD does not change anything.

I does not 'change' but it does SAVE, right?
Then the next time I want to edit I can work from the ones on my desktop without damaging the originals, right? |

When you drag the files to a folder on your desktop, they get copied to that folder on your hard drive. When you then burn these files on CD or DVD they are copied on your CD or DVD.

That stat won't change until AFTER the challenge is completed, I believe. :o)

That's right -- at this point "challenges entered" actually means "challenges completed." Also, many stats, such as comment numbers, only update on Mondays and Wednesdays, after the challenges close.
If you click on the link to submit to the challenge, it should take you to the page where you enter the info about it; there's a link there to preview the submission to see how it will look with the title and voting scale and all ... |
