I need some help with understanding color temps. I'm photographing glassware items that many people believe only look 'color correct' under 5000K lighting. However I would like to use something besides fluoros, so isn't it possible for me to use custom white balance and use whatever color temp lighting I want? Isn't that the whole point of white balance? This project would be done with a semi-pro digital slr...

Thanks for any assistance,

yea just shoot it in RAW mode, white balance changes can be made after the fact. You can set a custom WB as well. But shoot RAW for sure.

In all due respects saying 'shoot RAW', in and of itself, does not say anything and does not properly address this issue. Shooting RAW is better for many reason, one of them being that you can change color settings after the fact, but unless you want to always be fiddling with your color balance on each and every photo I believe it is best to get it as close as you can to begin with. To do this, in either RAW or fine Jpeg, you can use a white card or a neutral gray card to set a custom color balance from. The camera's user manual will tell you what controls to use for this. It is quite easy and can save you a lot of time later on.

The only thing I would add to what Tim has just said, which is very true, is to enusre that all your lamps are of as near as possible the same colour temperature, otherwise you'll have some amount of colour ccast in some areas of the shot whatever you do in post.

Thanks for the good advice. I didn't think about the lamps being the same, I'll make sure to do that.
