Great idea, I'll use that tip. Thanks Jon :) |

But doesn't that impede access to your lenscaps?

Clean the filters? While you're out and about? Radical idea.. You'll find that you can actually get quite a bit of dust on a front of the filter before it effects the in focus bits of your shots... It will show up in bokeh as small spots, but unless it's the mother of all dust, it wont show..
For what it's worth, I generally stick the caps in a pocket, but if I'm in a hurry I leave the front cap off when changing lenses, and rely on the filter to protect things. The back-cap always goes back on, well, sometimes.
Cheers, Chris H.

I just bought one, for (I think) about $190. Yes they do hold a tripod, and they also hold a large pile of gear. So far I'm very happy with mine.

have you ever shot near an ocean?>
yeah sometimes they get cleaned while out - mainly while home.
point is GoldBerry's argument is moot. and i imagine her filters are dirtier than mine seeing as she nevers uses a cap...

Ay, sea spray is a whole other mess on the filters.... That definately effects your photos.
Last time I did any serious shooting on a beach there was an onshore wind, and I has plastic bags taped all over my gear as it was my OM10 that wasn't even vaguely weather proof...

+1 for the pocket -- I learned that early as I was used to my fuji too. Then I set my cap sorta underneath my TV the first day I had my rebel and was taking a shot of my Jeep. Then I came back in and searched for it for about an hour and a half lol.

...and I have to add that once the lens cap goes in the jeans pocket, it washes well too. ;o)
Maybe I should try the bra thing, since there's no way I would be able to forget something is in there! LOL |

A Nikon friend of mine says it's easy to tell I'm a photographer - I've got that little circle in my back pocket and I'm obviously not a Skoal chewer. Body cap stays in the bag and rear lens cap gets switched from lens to lens as I change them out.
I'm chiming in that I'm a shoulder bag person too. I considered backpacks but know that I can't always set my bag down, even though it probably weighs about 20-30 lbs. at this point. I only weigh 120! Maybe I'm getting carried away with my gear? :)
To help distribute the weight and to keep it from sliding off as I walk around, I wear the strap bandolier-style across my body. It can get uncomfortable after about an hour or so, but if I have the camera out it's not so bad. |

Or just put in pocket as I do. |

What do you mean by impede access? With my backpack in front of me, I can open it and get what I need out of it when I need stuff without having to set my camera down and pull off my camera backpack. Ya know! :)

Lens caps revisited
Front Cap: Rarely used. When I go out to shoot, this cap stays off the camera till the end of my shoot and is placed in a designated pocket so I always know where it is, just in case of bad weather, etc. (How many times have you raised your camera to your eye only to realize the cap is still on.....'nough said) Any abuse will be blocked by the UV/Skylight filter.
Rear Cap: The rear element is the critical glass on the lens. Don't wanna scratch that sucker. This cap stays on the lens till it's ready for use and is swapped out with the lens already on the camera.
THESE CAPS NEVER GO IN A POCKET.....THEY GATHER LINT AND CAN END UP CONTAMINATING YOUR CCD/CMOS SENSOR WHEN THE MIRROR STARTS FLAPPING AROUND.
Body Cap: (See rear cap)

He means if you've got the lens cap stuffed down your bra, dosn't the back-pack on your front get in the way... :-).

No, I can handle it. I don't strap the back on THAT tightly!
