While I'm a photojournalist at heart, I am having a lot of fun and learning a lot by shooting with a couple of models. I have been trying to help Katie put together a basic portfolio and wanted to get your opinion on a handful of the more interesting shots from our latest session.

Nusbaum,
You're having a real problem with yout gold reflector overlighting her down vest. The face is taking back seat to the overly bright piece of clothing. The "reclining on couch" image is tremendously appealing as far as her espression goes, but the color cast is off and the background is distracting. Let me play with it a little...
Here's my take on the couch shot:
Let me know if you want details on how this was done, it was fairly complex.

i did like your background better bear, however it seems you changed the colors on the whole image making the face of the model overly red. I like it better on the original.

Leaf,
Somewhere in between might be better, An easy adjustment. It's hard to say because of monitor variations. Mine is a graphic arts-specific monitor and carefully calibrated, and on this monitor the original has a slight overall, dull green tone that is not flattering. The 'shopped version looks more natural, on my monitor. The print would be the final test.

These images are excellent. I was wondering, which lense did you use for these shots? |

I have a decent laptop with a nice screen, but I find it incredibly lacking for viewing/editing images. My Non-Calibrated low-end monitor at home and in the office has a more natural appearance and more closely matches the output on my also, rather low-end inkjet printer. |

yeah. i think my laptop screen is ok as far as laptop screens go, however, if often also have an old nokia hooked up to the laptop, and comparing the same image on both computers, shows a VERY low contrast on the laptop, as well as significant color differances..

The white vest was a bit of a challenge, perhaps these images will just get archived as lessons learned. I tried to make sure the vest didn't blow out and lose detail, but I didn't consider the impact such a large light area would have on the composition.
Color is a major challenge for me, not in seeing it but in deciding what to do with it. The shot in the chair for example... the light was indirect from a window and very blue. I warmed it up a bit but once I had deviated from reality I had a hard time deciding where to go with it. Maybe that is why I prefer black and white, I can spead hours working with the quality of the light rather than with the color of it. I would be interested to hear how you approached the problem.

My comments are directed at teh model's hair and the backgrond juncture - the blend into eachother, particularly in the 2nd and third shots.

The "relaxing on couch" has a wonderful expression. It's nice. I do see an overall green tinge in it. I like how bear's edit brought out the lipstick color but find that it is overall to warm.
If I was a model, I'd have no problem with you taking my portfolio shots! They are always unique and interesting, which is so much more than presenting a technically perfect shot without any life of it's own. |

I'm not sure how bear_music handled the color correction, so I took a stab at it myself. I went into level, set the white eye dropper to 190,190,190 and then clicked the little bit of white shirt under the sweater.
This seemed a little cool, but accurate for the light when shot, so I tried to warm it up a little.
Of course this revealed the dreaded color tint in the shadows under the chin, so I reverted to an area where I am more comfortable.
This quad tone looks like grap on one of my LCD monitors but I really like the depth on my main monitor.
Thanks again for the comments, once again they "encouraged" me to learn a bit more and become more focused in my efforts to improve.

Nusbaum,
Your second one is very nice, Probably better than mine, on overall warmth. One thing I did, that's easy to do, is selected out the lips and added a little more red to them with hue/saturation. No tmuch, just a tad.
The quad-tone is lovely.

In the original post, the third shot has a very camp-fire look to it (due to the position of the gold reflector I assume) which I think is cool. The last shot I really like..she just looks so naturally beautiful |
