Remember (if you're not asking permission and you don't have a huge lense) to turn off the auto flash. I was just about to snap one in a restaurant and boom the loud flash pops up outta nowhere -- I almost dropped my camera in my bowl of soup.

yep on canon dslrs also be careful that the flash doesnt try to help you find the focus. you can turn that off with a custom fuction in the 20d, not sure about the 300d, but probably.

hello dave , do you feel better today

yeah -- there's also a full automatic mode that you can put it in which is just no flash. Or I'm pretty sure you can disable the flash in all manual modes (the creative zone as canon calls it) -- but I think I lost my manual when we moved.

Yeah , I have done that before...pretty embarrassing.

whats really funny though, is letting someone try out the camera, then watching their face when the flash pops up...oh what fun

LOL...had a similar thing happen to me.

I was looking out my window one night and there were some people outside in the street talking, so I was going to take a candid from my window. Stupid me forgot about the AF assist light that pops on when you go to focus. Seeing that the house was completely dark, it was quite obvious when that bright ass light popped on. I about crapped. :-)

i leave my 300d in A-mode all the time, no auto flash for me ^_^

lol. My 300d just pops up the flash and lets out a nice series of 'micro flashes' to illuminate the subject -- I bet that's more obvious.

Although as soon as my flash popped up, I realized it and it didn't emit any light.

The laser AF assist is great fun when taking photos, I find most people don't know where it is comimg from. The person who's photo is being taken normally does not even notice it, others who are looking at him or her sure do. I hear a lot of "where is that red light coming from".
