I have a filter called "Unsharp Mask" in my image editor (Gimp). Is that allowed according to the current rules? I'm not sure what is meant there. Is general sharpening of the image or only this single effect "sharpening" allowed?

Stephan, I read where others use this feature and I use it myself. Since it is not an "individual feature selective" modification I believe it is acceptable.

Thanks David for your quick response. That reassured me for my current challenge submission ;-)

I think unsharp mask is ok... it's a golbal edit to the image...

I have a similar question...I don't know if I understand the rules completely...As long as it is a global adjustment, does it matter what filter or adjustment is made? ie: using a watercolor effect, hue saturation, gama adj., tone balance etc. Isn't this part of 'digital photography'? I had a picture, that when I made a few global adjustments, the outcome was nice, but no longer looked like a "photo", more like a hand rendering.

Watercolor is a filter and that is not allowed. Hue and saturation or anything else that is considered a global edit is allowed. As a general rule, if the photo becomes more digital art than photo after you are done, then it might be subject to disquailification.

I hope that helps answer your question. If you have that particular photo that looks like a hand rendering, I would love to see it. Even though we can't post those types of photos, it's always interesting to see what others can accomplish in their image editors.

In my gallery under MISC is a picture called 'Coffee Run' this is not the exact one, but it gets the idea across. I used local equilization (Corel) and it's not under the "effects" area. Coffee Run is actually one of my 'outtakes' sort of. I have a feeling this type of adjustment won't go over well - even though it really looked great for one of my other photos - oh well

I like the effect that you used, it makes the picture very interesting, but you're right, I don't think it would go over well here in the voting.

Thanks - that's what I thought - well, back to the digitalboard.

RedRuthann, I checked out the photos and they are all great. I agree with Maverick that cofferun looks really nice with the digital effect added. I also like psychedelic kitty.

My favorite out of all of them is the one title rainy day.

I have posted a photo for "city life" that I don't think will go over well either... That's a first for me. I have thought that every photo I have posted to this site would do well until this week. :)

Mine is definately different from any others I have posted so far. Since Montgomery is more urban sprawl than anything else, I had to go with something more reflective of that aspect.

I'm weak on the challenge topic... maybe the photo quality will have some merit.. lol

you got more guts than me. while i really liked the photo that i had submitted, i realized that it only VERY loosely tied into the topic (mainly because it was taken downtown and had no plants in it). my husband confirmed that it was a stretch for the challenge, so i have actually taken the shot out of the challenge again and won't be submitting this time. maybe i'll get some work done instead of obsessively checking my score this week! ;)

i may just post the shot in the outtakes though to get some feedback. i don't usually take people pictures, and definitely not sneaky ones of strangers (which this one is), so this was a major learning experience for me nonetheless.

I'm submitting a great photo. I need to submit this photo to reassure myself that I'm not pandering to the voter in these challenges :) I have said many times before that I don't care about the vote as much as i care about the feedback. I took several photos (listed in my outtakes link below) that do a much better job of showing city life than my actual submission does, but the photo that I liked best is the one I submitted...

and i'm one of those narrow-minded voters that actually like to see photos that are not only good photos, but that also meet the challenge in a way that's obvious to me. so i figured, i better not submit a photo that i'd have a hard time connecting to the challenge if i hadn't submitted it myself and knew the circumstances of it. :)

My photo meets the challenge... It's just not a beautiful nighttime city skyline or a long exposure of traffic passing by. It's a little more subdued than that... I think that it does a great job of defining city life where I live... But who will know that? :)

than you've done what i think everyone should do when submitting. you've entered a good photo that does represent the challenge topic.

good luck with it. even if the score isn't what you primarily submit for, it's still gratifying, if it's a good score, isn't it? ;)

It's gratifying to me regardless of the score... my photo in the shadows challenge is my favorite photo i have ever submitted here and it's gonna by my next to lowest score yet :)
