I totally agree with you on that point 'xion'. It is not time for questions its time for concern for our fellow man/woman that was in harms way. Has all DPC'ers and family been located?
Whatever anyone's beliefs maybe, I think its time to do what you believe in for the victims and for the survivors. For me, I will be praying for all effected.
May God bless all and that all missing be found in good health. |

I was wondering if some knew because there are a several of people on the roof tops prior to the first wave with cameras. It was if they were expecting something. I don't know if that was just a coincidence. Look at some of the films and you will see people on roof tops before first wave.
CNN just reported that the red cross is estimating that as many people will die because of decease over the next few day/weeks that did in the tsunami itself. |
Speaking of the Red Cross... if anyone would like to help in anyway by donating, here are a couple of links you may be interested in:
Red Cross Donation Page
Red Cross Main Page
Since I have been to those countries, while my tour in the Navy, I felt somewhat personally drawn to donate my share.

Look. we are like tiny ants in this planet we call earth. It is a body that is not settled. Big changes are taking place of which we have no say so at all. These eruptions have taken place before and some have changed the geography and it is something which may happen again and again and no scientist can predict them because there is no data about the core available. The earth was not put here as our paradise. It and its elements can suddenly turn on us all.
At such times as these, people are dead and dying and with shortages and hardships and bad water and total confusion, the best that we can do is help. However, to divert this thread from its compassionate vein is sacriligious.

I have deleted two out-of-line posts and any replies to them.
Please let's keep this on topic and not turn it into a political or religious rant.
Thank you.

Absolutely horrifying videos...and the death toll is just wicked.
What makes these so scary is once they happen, they move under the water at 500+MPH (the speed of a jet) before they hit land.
Horrible, Horrible disaster. |

Really hard to imagine until you take some time to look at some
of a photojournalist's captures. That is one time I would have a hard
time putting a camera up to my eye. The mass burial sites shots hit hard.

sometimes, when life goes beyond understanding, and the images are too overwhelming, all we can do is drop back, take a breath, and then dig in. sometimes it helps to have something simple to help center us, something to help make our faith tangible. i can find that something simple in this new image by aznym...

Just reported on FoxNews the death toll has reached 76,000. I know I'm only 39 years old but I think this the the worst natural disaster in our life time.
My prayers go out to everyone there and to everyone that is missing a love one. |

I was trying to explain all this to my kids last night... my ten year old really has no idea that in his very short life thus far, he has witnessed more history than I did in all the 24 years I had before he was born. I was explaining to him how he has seen much more war than I was exposed to (except for the first Gulf war), horrific natural disasters such as this one that I didn't see (I know horrible things happened such as this but not of this magnitude), and that he is witnessing what will be in his children's history books. Truly earth-changing events. It's difficult enough for me to comprehend the enormity of this calamity, much less for him to understand it. When he went to bed last night the death toll was still near 60K so I told him that it was like our entire city being wiped away...all its residents completely obliterated...times 3 (we live in a small town of 20K). That put it in terms he could sort of comprehend.
When school starts back I am sure this will be a topic in many classrooms around the globe. I don't think we've even begun to see or comprehend the far-reaching, worldwide ramifications this disaster will have. |

In April 1991 a cyclone killed 138,000 people in Bangladesh. I fear this one may end up going past that number. I remember at the time not being able to believe that many people could die in one cyclone. |

The latest news talk of more than 100,000 deaths and diseases starting to spread. We should do more than what our governments are doing to help. I highly recommend donations to Doctors without borders, an organization doing amazing work in areas of the world where people want the least to go.

I gave them a donation today, and it is my charity of choice because of the highly ethical work they do.

An act of God? Not a very nice one then I think.
This is so tumultuous that it's put me off taking frivolous pix or doing anything for myself. I just want to give something directly to them.
And I'm absolutely disgusted at the pathetic aid offerings of the US and British governments. They basically amount to a single week's lottery win... which puts their priorities firmly into perspective.

I did too. MSF do an amazing job and are an organisation I've read so many good things about for so many years. I decided not to restrict their use of my money and said they could use it as required rather than only for SE Asia crisis as I thought they might find that a lot of people did select that specific cause and that their funds for other urgent work might suffer. I have faith in their ability to put their efforts were they are most needed.

Please note that graphicfunk's previously hidden post of 12/28/2004 10:27:08 PM has been reinstated. I had previously deleted all replies to an inappropriate post since they did not make sense once the previous post was removed. My concern was that with the original post deleted, it would look like graphicfunk was criticizing the posting of charity links, when he was actually critisizing a post that was deleted.
With a day to think about it I realized that in the case of this particular post, addition of an admin note would sufficiently resolve that issue. Accordingly I have unhidden his post -- please do go back and read his post as it is a worthwhile read. While general policy will continue to be removal of replies to removed posts (when those replies do not make sense without the original), this was a rare instance where application of that policy did not make sense.
Daniel, please accept my apologies for any upset I may have caused. And to everyone else, please do go back and read his post -- it is a worthwhile read.
-Terry

Thanks for the link to DWB. Believe it or not, I heard about it for the very first time on Will and Grace a few seasons ago and thought then that it sounded like an awesome organization. Just gave them some money. I hope a lot of people are donating- I wonder if anyone is keeping any kind of overall tally?
BTW, did you all hear that Linkin Park- I kid you not- donated $100,000 and is setting up a website to take in more donations?

Links to the various national offices of Doctors Without Borders can be found here. By linking to your country's site you can donate in your local currency.
Donations through DoctorNick's link will be in Canadian dollars so be sure to adjust accordingly.

Some useful donation links here and some terrifying footage of the wave wiping out an entire village/area here.
My heart bleeds for these poor people, some of whom have lost three generations of family in around 1-2 minutes. |
