Okay, it really looks like the top choices for the Manfrotto heads seem to be the 488RC series and the 322RC series.
I will be buying one of these today or tomorrow and it looks like many of you own these, so please help a few of us out by adding to the list of differentiators (or correcting) and explaining which head you prefer and why.
Here's what I think I know so far:
322RC*
- Quick-grip
488RC*
- Little bit less money
- Lock head with panning locked separately (for panoramas, etc.)
- Higher rating for max. weight

I just got the 322RC on a Manfrotto 3011 tripod for Christmas. So far I love it- WAY better than any tripod I've used before. |

Anything specific you like/dislike about the grip or the whole head?

I haven't worked with it that much yet, but I do have one concern. The range of vertical movement seems limited, so I might have to turn the camera sideways to shoot very high or low. The ball head movement is smooth, and I love the way the quick release clamps securely into place. While not specific to the head, I wish the tripod had lever-type locks rather than thumbscrews. |

Those that use the Grip action seem to like it very well. Fast and secure. My experience is with the 488's. I have no complaints except on very long lenses like Sigma's 50-500. I am considering getting manfrottos larger "pro" unit with the teflon ball.

I got a RC322 for Christmas. I'd like to hear from users their thoughts on how to orient it. Should I set it up to use my right hand because I'm right handed? or do you set it up to use your left hand so that your right hand can be free to operate the shutter release and other controls? |

I have the 322. The only issue I have come across with it is using it with a battery grip and the 70-200 lens. If I try to mount the lens collar on the tripod head, there are some clearance problems that have to be negotiated, normally by orienting the grip to the left side of the camera rather than the right.

Good question! At first, I thought I would definitely orient it to the left if I got it so I could play with the controls but then I thought that while positioning the camera I'm not normally playing with controls, just composing...so maybe it would be better to free up the left hand for the zoom?
Perhaps the key is to position it vertically? I look forward to hearing from users on this one as well!

I had the same problem with my 10D & battery grip combo. I solved it by reversing the quick-release base plate so the lever faces towards the front. IOW, the 322's grip is on the right and the lever is on the front. Opening the lever moves it away from the camera's battery grip. It works great.
