I took a trip a little while ago to Chicago and took a couple hundered photos. But I don't live there so I'm hesitant to post them...

How do you post 'life' ?
'City Life' is whatever you make it is.
I don't think the title infers that there has to be a living thing in the photo at all.
If we get that anal here man..it just ain't worth posting pics here any longer because then it gets to be some easter egg hunt, trying not only to find that synergy between challenge topic and photo composition but now its all about the narrow view that each and every word of a challenge topic has to exist verbatim in the photo.
No extrapolation, no poetic play, hidden meaning.
Why don't we just start telling people "This weeks challenge go take a picture of a red fire hydrant that has 3 plugs, is 2-1/2 feet tall, attached to concrete and must have a 3 o'clock shadow clearly defined extending no longer than twice the lenght of the subject without the shadow crossing any other potential subjects that may confuse the voter as to the actual subject of the photo. Lighting can be assisted but must not be more than a single strobe flash not to exceed 250 K in color deviation from the subject".

It may sound bad but I believe the 'easter egg hunt' is in effect every week based on comments that I read..

Life in a ghost town is extinct. But it is still the current life in that city. There are times when I shoot photos in LA when there are literally no inhabitance. So, the life in the city is what it is. It could be plant life. It could be non existent. The challenge states clearlyâ€Â¦ “Relative to where you live”. But I don’t believe I will be docking points for those of you who travel outside of “relative to where you live” to get a good inspiring shot.

I started this post in a down mood. My little mayberry is not photogentic except in little details I don't have the equipment to capture. Further it's a college town so the downtown/campus area is mostly deserted this time of year. But OOPS! I forgot Thursday nights they have mini arts festival all durring June. I'm happy to report I now have too many pictures to choose from *big grin*. Then again I may still go with something symbolic just to be different. Happy Hunting Y'all. aelith |

I traveled all the way to Hootersville - Only to discover they don't allow cameras in the joint. :) |

ROTFLOL!!! That's Hooterville, not Hooters.
I have an idea of what I want to do but the same bashfullness that kept me from getting a shot for the people contest is working on me again. How does everyone get over feeling strange photographing in crowded places? |

You just go ahead and shoot like you are supposed to be there and nothing is out of the ordinary. Today I was getting pix of two cops directing traffic---kind of like a ballet. No one even noticed me. Too much clutter behind them though.Couldn''t use them.

i was shooting in Fresh Field's yesterday. That's a hippie grocery store with a cafe, in DC.
I was sitting on a stool, pretending to read a book about cameras and changing the settings on mine, when in reality, i was framing the doorway and taking pictures as interesting clientele came in.
So one way to do it is be stealthy. try to stay below the radar - unfortunately with this method you often sacrifice good framing, etc . . .
Another way to do it is to dress like a 'shooter:' 'put on a backwards cap, nice casual clothes if you're just on the street, or clothes appropriate for the occasion if you're at an event, headphones, cellphone, maybe even your camera bag: every thing that makes you look like you're 'at work'.
when you're dressed and act like that, people seem to think you're press, and that you have a reason and right to be there, doing that. occasionally, you might want to ask someone if you can shoot them, and then, this is the part that really wins them over: you show them the previews on your lcd - they always go 'wow that looks really good'. then they ask me about what i'm about and i might say 'oh i have an assigment for my photography class, i'm a student', or 'i'm working on a story ... but i couldnt pass up a pic of your _insert whatever it was that made you want to take their picture_.'
actually, i took some pics tonite on the sidewalk of a guy with a huge cockatiel on his shoulder. i asked him if it was ok and he agreed, and when i showed him the previews him and his friend were really excited. cant wait to check em out : )

Okay, I've just submitted a picture that is very typical for "city" life in my neck of the woods. I expect come Monday morning, it will either be crucified, or I may even be dq-ed. But hey, life in a small town is like that sometimes. :-) jmsetzler: compared to my town, your town is HUGE! |

i have the same problem. BUT .... drum roll ... i went out shooting some photos tonight and kind of did what others described ... playing around with the camera while in reality taking pictures. it helps that i have a swivel lcd so i can actually hold my camera at waistlevel and still see what the shot's going to be like. anyway. i've taken a person picture in the city and submitted it. all proud of myself.
of course, i expect that it won't comply with the general interpretation of challenge, but i like the shot anyway. :)
you guys definitely push me to do stuff that i wouldn't photograph otherwise - thanks!

Yes... it's called a "Hologram AF" and it is designed to illuminate a subject in the dark so the auto focus can work properly... It works really well, but not in a stealth mission :)

Karmat, I live in an English City about the size of an American City Block. very Quaint it maybe but it does not lend itself to the sprawling Metropolises that I expect to see on Monday. You can only work with what you've got. If people don't like it then no probs, as long as you have fun thats all that matters.Keep up the good work ;-)

Hey thanks for the advice everyone. I'm starting to get excited about going out and doing this. I'm getting a little tired of just having average photos with flaws and I think I'm ready to stretch myself and try new things. That's the grat thing about this site. |
