All of my recent shots have lots of noise. It doesnt seem to matter what ISO setting I use. Am I doing something wrong in Photoshop or is my camera broken. I am not happy with any of my recent shots since in my opinion they all have lots of noise in them. I know that there are programs out there to reduce noise but it seems like all of my shots have way to much noise in them or are the changes in photoshop creating the noise. I dont even pretend to be a photoshop guru so I do very little changes to my photos. All shots were taken in RAW.. Could it be the white balance changes create lots of noise? I also noticed that longer exposures create tons of noise regardless of the ISO setting. Anyone care to comment. Thank you for your time. All comments are welcome. |

Great pictures. I can't see any noise, though. Perhaps because the shots are resized?

You should post a full size crop for us to see the noise because like this I can't see any.

With a question like this, you should also add the exposure information.

Yes, do post 100% crops of the originals, as well as unedited (except resizing) version of the originals, and exposure information. that will help immensely in getting to the root of the problem.

I don't personally see any noise (like someone said, post a 100% crop of like the sky for example so we can see).
Sharpening your photos will bring out the noise. When sharpening, try viewing at 100% so you can see if that happens. Also, there's nothing wrong with using neat image or another program that gets rid of the noise.
On a side note, those shots are great. A little different angle or composition and they would really be superior. You really captured some great subjects!

Actually, I can see some of the noise you may be referring to. Often this is a result of just barely not enough light in the haze of what digital photography inevitably causes with RAW photos. It also appears that the white balance may be slightly off.
I wont suggest the 100% crop (but there of course it is) as others have already done.
Take a look at Noise Ninja ( //www.picturecode.com ) to see about a great photoshop plug-in that does a great job of reducing noise.
Also, in Photoshop, adjust your levels slightly to clip out the dark and light at say 5 and 250. This will make blacks blacker and whites whiter which in turn will make a lot of shadow noise simply disappear.
As has already been mentioned, Nice subjects! ;-)

Thank you for the comments. I would post the 100% crop but dont know how to do that?? The noise does show up in the sky portion of the photos --lots in my opinion. Maybe it is my monitor? Not sure. I do shoot on auto white balance since I am afraid to change that but I guess I should experiment a bit... just not sure how changing the white balance in the camera changes the photos. A little research and experimentation is in order. I will also try out the noise plug in as recommended. Once again thank you everyone for your comments. I will post the camera/shot settings on the photos if anyone is bored and wants to look at them further. Once again thank you and I will keep practicing. Aloha, Renee

Photos look clear to me.
If you want to know if its the camera or not, do the photos have a lot of noise before processing them or just after?
I think you should find one image at 100% crop the section you are talking about and save the crop and show that. That way you only have to show that section and therefore can post a bigger version here :)

long exposures are quite known to accentuate digital noise.
another reason why film is still popular...

First off neat photos, I heard you folk were getting pounded on the North Shore.
The noise does not look too bad from what you have posted, the haze tends to make thing look like they have more noise then they really do. As others have said it is hard to tell from an image that has been resized down.
The other thing you might want to look at is when you convert from raw there should be a parameter called luminance smoothing, your camera will put some of this in when is saves a photo as a jpg but it is up to you to decide how much you want when converting from raw.

Yes the waves where a record high for the past 10 years. I think around 40 feet at Waimea. I took these at Pipeline down the road. It was super salty and the salt in the air does look like a fog or haze. Thank you for your comments on the RAW conversion luminance I will try playing with that. Thanks to everyone for your time.. This is just what you needed to post. I don't see any noise, what I see is a lot of sea spray that makes the sky look very hazy. This will make photos look like they have low contrast. Try taking a photo the clear sky and see how that looks.

I agree. I'm not seeing noise. I'm seeing sea spray.
