Well, after looking at some night-time photos, I really got inspired and decided I had to get out and take a few shots. I set out to brave the 20-degree weather and I'm happy with the turnout.
I only had one run in with the local authorities (but that is expected as I was in an industrial-type area that dealt with a lot of chemicals and manufacturing of goods). All in all, the officer was really polite, as was I.
All comments, critiques, inquiries, and questions greatly appreciated.
Thanks, dave

OK David you asked for it.........I feel that of all these images the first one offers the most sense of a mood. The composition is excellent and somehow the scene creates a sense of loneliness and yet activity at the same time. Its almost like feeling that life is moving on and your outside the flow. Some would say its too blurry but I kind of like it that way in this instance. Personally I would rotate it slightly counter clockwise. It might also work well in black and white if you were to adjust the channels to achieve a nice balance of tone.
The others don't really grab me but the first definitely generates some emotional response.
Cheers.

Greetings,
Of them all, the only one that really appeals to me is the 4th one "Nelville Chemical" It almost looks like something that would be on some corporate PR piece from them, or perhaps a shareholders mailing, any thoughts on attempting to market the print to them? The only thing on it that I'd perhaps rework would be the lighting in the lower foreground section to the right, not sure how far away it was, but if you could get some flash in there I think it'd be just about perfect, IMHO.

I like the 'Painted Tracks' photo quite a bit. How did you make your decision for the exposure settings on these?

The only one that touches me is #3 - Painted Train Tracks. I like the head/tail lights w/o cars. No reason, it just works.
The others are a bit too bland for me - not bad, you see, but don't touch me/don't do anything for me.

Hmmm...I have never really thought about Neville Island as a photo op. LOL! The pictures are nice...but what made you shoot there? You are lucky you didn't turn green from being there! I live in Robinson, which is right across the Ohio. |

heh thanks a lot everyone.
...As far as exposure settings, 3 seconds is the max my camera will do or it would have been longer in some situations.
...What made me shoot at Neville Island? Well, I was looking at a lot of photos of cityscape and things like that and the ones shot at night just really appealed to me for some reason. So Neville Island just popped into my head -- I went to school there for automotive technology, so I was familiar with the area.
...As far as Neville Chemical and using a flash, it was pretty far away -- it's taken from the public street as the security guard I asked if I could enter said no.

Thanks for the comments all...any more are welcome!

You can get 15 seconds in manual mode. I love it! :-D |

I discovered this same thing for my S7000. I often use "A" mode (the apeture mode) to get the light (shutter speed) at a certain apeture, then shift it to manual mode and bump it up or down a couple notches on the shutter speed, depending on what type of mode I want.
