Hey everyone,

I've been doing some shooting for a virtual magasine coming out soon on the internet. Right now, i got a mandate to shoot tactical gear and i'm having a bit of a problem. Lots of black gear, and some of it turns purple? I've tried different lightings, none at all (daylight only) and nothing seems to solve this problem. Anyone's god any idea how to fix this?

Thanks for any help.
Here

Click on the last button out of the 5 above the white box when you type and put in the 5 or 6 digit image ID in the popup window.

Hrm, it's not an all over purple and you do have blackish tones in the image. Have you tried changing your white balance? Although it doesnt look like a color cast. Could try using -EV to see if that darkens it a little. Have you tried shooting the purple items without anything else in the scene? If so, does it still come out purple? And I guess the most obvious question is, is it really that just a dark purple instead of black?

This a super quick fix I did on the image

All I did was use Hue/Saturation and turned down the saturation on the red channel down to -68 and magenta channel down to -73.

Looks like black now.

Alternatively, just convert to greyscale. By doing so you may lose the brass colour in the bullets, but you gain so much in the overall tone and contrast of the image; it really makes a great B and W image.

Another thing is that lots of black fabric actually contains quite a bit of red/burgundy colored dye, so your shot may actually reflect the true color of your subject. I've noticed that you can really see this particularly in bright light while wearing polarized sunglasses. Perhaps a polarizer can help with getting the shots right the first time, but your photoshop solution is so simple, it may not be worthwhile to buy a filter if you don't have one already.

The black surface in this photo is probably changing color because of the surrounding environment. There may be something red or similarly colored on a wall nearby that is causing that.
