i'm planning on on buying a 4.0 with a bunch of features vs a 5.0 with lesser features.

i know image quality improves the higher the pixel rate but is it a really significant difference?

What will you be printing?

What are the two cameras and what is the tradeoff in features?

I would suspect that my vote would go towards better features (particularily Shutter speed priority, aperture priority, more ISO settings, etc.)

I would go for the 4.0 with more features.
I would also check out the reviews for both cameras.

More pixels do not necessary mean better, I would go for features rather than the extra 1M. An extra 1m pixels does not guarantee image quality - i can still take bad photos with 6.3m! If you intend to do a lot of printing and want to enlarge then the extra 1m will make a difference albeit a small difference.

5 mm Sensor with 3 Mil photodiodes does better job amd less noise than same size sensor eih 6 Mil smaller photodiodes.

Look for high quality optics,Megapixel is just sales ploy!

The image quality doesn't necessarily improve with difference in megapixels. More megapixels does not mean a better quality image. It just means that it's got more pixels. A 4MP camera can give better results than a 5MP camera.

edit: it's a quality vs quantity issue and you are going by quantity.

I used to use a Finepix S602 and always had it in 3mp mode. A while back I had entered 5 of my pictures in a single Power Point presentation slide for a contest at my job. I ended up (sort of) winning and I had my presentation printed at 6ft x 9ft. That's right...feet, not inches. About 2 meters x 3 meters. The print is on canvas and it looks great. The smallest of the pictures on that banner is about 3ft of 4ft and I don't notice any loss in quality. How they printed it is beynd me, but I now know it can be done with pictures that were originally 3mp. I think you'll be fine with the 4mp camera with the added features.

However, I think there are more questions to ask. The optical quality from a Canon or Sony might give clearer pictures than a Casio or HP (IMHO). There may also be known quality issues with whatever 4mp you are choosing. Can you give more specifics?

Higher pixel count allows you to crop more away and still leave enough pixel remaining for a good print. Most consumer digitals have an image ratio of 4:3 so for an average 4x6 inch print you need to crop away something from top or bottom (or both).

But for a good 4x6 print you need only 1200x1800 pixels, which is 2.2 MP, so even a 3 MP is good enough.

But it is very comfortable to have more, it depends on your budget.
And if you want to make enlargements you want more as well.

i've seen the reviews owens and i like the 4.0 better. anyway its a Canon PowerShot G2 and a Olympus C-50 Zoom. the canon is worth 900 bucks and the olympus is 480 but for some reason i can get them both for the same price... about 350 bucks.

plus i don't think i'd be printing em... much.

so the extra 1M isn't really worth it?

Not if you aren't printing.

The PowerShot G2 is still one of the most popular cameras on this site for good reason. Go with the Canon, no question.

I went with a 3MP Canon partly so I'd have less data to back up -- I know I wasn't going to print larger than that size can handle (which, if you're careful what you do, can be about 16x20), and I take a lot of pics (and don't trash any) so my drives can get clogged pretty quickly.

I'd definitely trade 1MP for better optics and feature set. What actully most helped me decide was that the one I chose uses standard batteries (not proprietary) and the cheapest kind of CF memory.

Since when was a Canon G2 worth $900?
12/15/2004 07:36:15 PM · #17
My g6 didn't cost as much as you are saying the g2 cost. $900 is awfully high for that camera.
Are you buying them new? If not, you might want to shop around a little more and get a warranty with the camera.

The prices on the review sites are the prices at which the various cameras originally came out. As technology has improved, prices have dropped drastically. So some of the prices there really look way out.

Just as an example, my Olympus C2100-UZ is still showing at dpreview at $1300.00, which was the price over 4 years ago. Pretty big money for a 2 megapixel camera by today's standards!
