As I'm well aware of my limited ability to win a ribbon I want to suggest something..... after every event the critique club or sc or some body of appointed people should go through the entries and choose a few merits to be given the merit ribbon/s. It goes without saying these are experts and also that if no merit is noted, it simply just is not given. Just think about it.

Anyone can join the critique club and the SC are just picked from a bunch of applications, not necessarily the 'best' photographers on the website. Having them pick 'merits' is the same as a small number of voters picking the winners from the images that didnt get ribbons in the challenge. There isnt really any point. If there was going to be 'merit' type awards it would probably be for the 4th through 10th or so to the people who got close but no cigar.
As for your limited ability to win a ribbon..... when I started on DPC I didnt think I would ever break a 6 let alone a ribbon. Eventually I broke a 6, eventually I got a ribbon, eventually I got a 7 and so on. You may not be ready now, but that doesnt mean you never will be. Instead of falling back on a merit ribbon just keep going for the blue, one day you may get there. |

lol I'm at the eventually got a 6 stage...
I totally agree with what you are both saying. If you are persistant and open enough to listen and learn you will improve. That said I'm all for offering something along the lines of an encoragement or merit award, just not sure how it can be managed.

I've no ribbons so far and realize that I may never get one, but haven't given up all hope. These days I am satisfied to score higher than my Avg Vote Received.
I don't see anything in this proposal that is an improvement over the present (however flawed) system of rewarding the better images. Does being on SC, or having a ribbon, make someone an expert on determing the "merit" of other peoples photos?
Maybe a campaign to ecucate the voters would serve better. Find a way to guide people to give their highest votes to true quality photographs instead of the "eye candy" and photoshop slickies that seem to do so well. I think that should get a lot of support here.

No.
The "organic" form of what I think you want is a thread started after the voting, typically titled "Most under-rated ___ Photo" where the person would list a few photos they thought were better than the voters gave it -- others then comment and add their own selections.
These threads used to occur quite regularly, but lately have been largely replaced by out-takes and other subjects. Feel free to start one, but try and keep it all in one thread ...start it under the Challenge Results category. |

Why not have something that automatically after a challenge something appears for all users to post there favorite photos that were underated from that challenge.that could help people to see what the general people like.
And it also gives a happy smile to the person when his photo appears on that page.
And its a good way to give attention to new great tallents.
I would think this ideia would be great what do you think?

The results of these threads can be a little awkward since the top 10 photos aren't generally regarded as underrated, but they're obviously "what the general people like." |

Not really like in some of the challenges where there are lots of participations there are photos that get really under rated that people like. And sometimes we have different tastes, Like one of the photos that won the landscape challenge i don't really like it, i think there were better photos.
This is just my opinion.

Not to argue, just pressing my memory... I seem to recall this was the reason the Individual Photograph Discussion forum was started, because some people got tired of seeing the "most underrated photos" threads popping up in other forums. (Makes no diff to me...) |

I try to take photos that connect with others.
The way I gauge this? The number of folks that select my photo as a favorite... these are my merit ribbons.
Seriously. If anybody else can see enough in one of my images to select it as a favorite... mission accomplished.
I don't work as hard as I should on all of my submissions, but many (actually most) of the ones I do like and have put effort into have been selected as favorites. |

Could be -- the difference I see is that the Individual category is usually to post your own photo, regardless of whether it's a challenge entry, out-take, or unrelated to any challenge -- the type of thread titled "Why Didn't My ___ Do Better?" or "What Do You Think Of ___"
It seems to me that a SINGLE thread discussing the results of a challenge -- especially when posted to comment on other people's photos -- is perfectly appropriate. |

If it got a low score in the Challenge, then how is it under rated? It is only under rated by the vocal minority then. Kind of like what I heard on the radio about the Parents Telvision Council. Of the 1.5 million complaints that the FCC got in 2003...99.9% were from the PTC-a vocal minority.
I have my favorites, that I feel are undrer rated. And of course ALL mine are under rated! I just mark them as favorites. (C:
