Sent an email to our local community newspaper with a link to my gallery pics from the weekend agricultural show. Got home from work tonight to an email from them
Great pictures!
Just wondering if you would be interested in providing us with a nice front page photo for our holiday editions Dec 28 and Jan 4? I'm thinking of something relevant to that time of year; Dec 28 being just before the end of the year and Jan 4 being the start of the new year.
The only catch is we would need them both by Dec 17.
I want to do this!! But, must admit I'm ....ok I'm scared that I'll fail !! Kinda like a challenge only very local and public! Help.......I need ideas!
We're a bigger town in the far north rural NZ, it's summer here, we have great beaches. Can't think of any ideas right now, my mind has gone into a total blank. I have to go to work tonight, but will email them in the morning to say yes......and pray for fine weather this weekend cos I can't take time off work during the week. In the meantime....some words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

oh, sue, go for it! you have almost two weeks. plenty of time to shoot, refine, reshoot, and shoot again. and you have a boatload of backseat drivers who will be more than willing to critique the work...
what a great recognition for your work. they wouldn't ask if they didn't think you could deliver! |

Thanks Skip :) It was just a bit of a shock, thought they'd want to use some of the stuff I'd already done!! Easy enough to go to an event, take photos and send link to the paper. This is very different!
I'll send an email tonight before I go out, then I won't "forget" in the morning. :)

What great news! You can do it. What are some new year's traditions over there? |

;) Apart from getting drunk! Not a lot. Most people seem to spend majority of the holidays at one of the beaches. New Year's Day they have the Highland Games, but don't think it's possible to get pics of that till the day.
Too late to back out now, sent an email saying yes I was interested. Asked if they had articles planned and did they want the photos to be related to the articles.
Thanks for the support

Wow sue...after looking at your work..just go out and use your instinct, because your shots look GREAT! That situation would call for instinct and vision anyhow...so use em. I am happy to come across your work! Keep it up!

The only way to fail is NOT to deliver a picture.
So once you deliver it's all about how successful it can be. I would suggest giving them a choice, such as 2 or 3 shots to pick from.
Checking your work you should do great.

If these pictures are the ones being considered for the front page seasonal shot? Did they say color or B&W?
Of this series of shots I like these two: DSC07719rs and DSC07568boat being the best of the group.
I desaturated both and they still look great.
No comments on editing because I like them the way they are. |

Have you turned them in yet? I like the mother child series. They don't look like they need any editing. Any of them.
Hope your sore throat gets better. |

Better today than yesturday thanks Pat.
Ended up emailing the editor with a gallery link and letting him choose what he wanted. He likes one of the mother and child (her crouching down), one of the surf patrol (going out through the people on the boards), the fisherman and the kids on the skateboards. I'm dropping a disc off to them tomorrow with the full size files on. Was going to email them but it'll take forever on dialup.
He also asked me how much I wanted to be paid and I thought honesty was the best policy......told him I had no idea as this was a first for me (he more or less knew that already) I'll let you know how I get on. |
