I was wondering about the legality of using a filter/plug-in that corrects the distortion of a fisheye lens? Is this legal since it applies to the entire image?

From my understanding of the rules, that would be fine in Advanced, but not in Basic.

I would be interested in hearing what the ruling would be on this as well. I would think this would be the same as adjusting the perspective in a photo. In reading the rules for basic editing I am not clear whether perspective adjustment would be allowed or not.

I'm inclined to say yes for both challenges. In the rules filters must be applied to the whole image, which this filter does, and the integrity of the photo must be maintained. So I think as long as it is being used to correct for some lens distortion as opposed to creating a distorted effect it should be allowed. I see this as being different from correcting perspective distortion because perspective distortion is the way we see things in real life whereas lens distortions are generally a result of zoom lens designs. I could be all wrong here but this is what I think. Maybe some other Council members will chime in with some more accurate advice.

I seem to remember General saying perspective correction is not allowed in either.
I may be wrong but it needs checking.

I may be wrong but lens correction and perspective correction are two different things, are they not? Perspective correction can be adjusted by camera placement but no matter where I shoot from with my fisheye... I'm still going to have the circle effect.

Anything that moves any pixels is not permitted in Basic, which would include perspective correction etc. However, Advanced allows for this, as long as you're not adding/changing/removing any major elements of the image.

Based on a review of past SC discussion on the matter, Manic's assessment agrees with the majority view at the time of the last SC discussion (September of this year). Persepctive or de-fishing are allowed in advanced, but not in basic.

BTW, some perspective error will always be present if the sensor plane is not parallel to the surface of interest (such as the front of a building). Though it is in theory always possible to compose with this in mind, it sure is limiting! A tilt/shift lens makes alternative compositions possible while avoiding the perspective problems, but not all of us can justify a T/S lens.

To be honest I'm not sure where I got the filter but it's listed as Panorama Tools on my photoshop filter list. Hope this helps.
