At the rate my shutterstock downloads are going (approx 2$ per day, versus istock 1$ per day) I am not going to go exclusive with istock. The 5% bonus would not compensate for the loss.

Sorry. I have to brag. I have the image of the week at istock! A first for me. I'm pretty excited about it. Last night when I went over to read about the new agreement I was checking out my downloads and saw. I was drunk and thought I was imagining it, but this morning it's still there.

I don't think I will sign that contract because right now I am making more at shutterstock then istock.

Me too - in fact much more. :) I don't think the bonus to istock is helpful - sure, Lise is gonna love it. Doesn't help me. I have less than 500 anyways.

Congrats.. It will be interesting to see how many downloads it generates for you.

So, who's making the most money from these stock sites?
I mean, if you only put your "bad" photos up, they won't get downloaded very much so you won't make much from them.
If you put really good images up to get lots of downloads (let's say 500 downloads) you've made $100-250 over a six month period (just as an example).

Now, take those same GREAT photos and get them listed with a *ahem* REAL stock agency and you're talking about fewer "downloads" (uses) at a much much higher rate. Like potentially thousands of dollars per use. It doesn't make sense to me.

Get all excited over a hundred or two dollars from "selling" tons of your photos? I guess there's some excitement there, but why bother with that much effort when you could put that same amount of effort into contacting and presenting your photos to established stock agencies and make hundreds or thousands of times more money per image? *hundreds or thousands of TIMES more*

Think small, be small... Why not at least give a shot to selling to the big agencies? I have no intention of whoring out my skills for pennies. I would hope that most people truly interested in and confident with their photography would feel the same.

I'm no pro and haven't even tried too hard to sell images, but to date, I've sold no more than 7-8 photos for single use (mostly publications) and made nearly $1000. I have no intention of putting valuable imagery online for nothing, hoping to one day rack up enough downloads so that I can receive a $100 check.

Just another perspective, my $.02
(which you can apply to your account, if you like)

I'm interested in selling photos to publications and such, however I don't know how to go about it. Do you have any advice as to where to start?

The issue I have is that if I want to sell a print for big bucks and yet have it up on a site for download for dirt cheap, I'm devaluing my services and my time and my prints.

How many of you have your images up on istockphoto or some other site, as well as listing them at DPCPrints, or sell them on your own? There's a big conflict there. This summer I sold an image (yes digial file) for $300. I'm not going to offer that up for a $0.40 sale, nor any of my other work.

In principle I agree with you. But I tried dpcprints for several months without success before trying any stock sites. At least when I sell a few pictures at iStock or Shutterstock, I get the satisfaction of knowing that my work is of use to someone. When I improve as a photographer (and get a better camera), I can always reconsider my position if I believe I can earn more from my photos. But for now I am learning what is and isn't of use to others and getting paid for it (eventually).

I guess it depends on the publication and the photos, but it's pretty much all the same.

For my newspaper shots, I just contacted the photo editor, said "hey, I got these here - interested?" and he said yes to a couple because they were appropriate to news stories they were covering. The other route for a newspaper (or any publication for that matter) is to propose a story idea based on your shots or based on shots that you would take. Pretty common way of going about it, actually.

For my magazine shots, I again contacted the appropriate person (editor covering the area I was interested in shooting - in this case, amateur motorsports) to see if he was interested in some photos I shot recently. At that point, I also asked if there were any upcoming events they needed coverage for. They did, so I went and shot, wrote a short article and they published photos in a few issues.

At one of these events, a tire manufacturer came up to me and expressed interest in buying photos of their sponsored car for promotional use. Pretty simple, really. It's just a matter of getting your photos in front of the right person at the right time.

All of this within the last six months, these few experiences are all that have made up my $1000 or so. Not bad for a total of a few hours work. If I were pursuing it more, I'm sure I could parlay these experiences into much more.

funny this topic should come up...
I just got another check today for 5 more photos for
Grassroots Motorsports Magazine. Run to the barnes & noble
and there they are! That's three issues in a row, all from a single
day's "work" (if you can call running around all day with full access
and the best perspectives on a race track work).

It only further strengthens my argument that you don't need to sell
yourself cheap. Before that day at the track I'd only shot one other
autosports event, so I'm by no means a pro. It's just a matter of talking
to the right people and being able to produce what they want.

Good luck!

Edited to add link.

$0.5 or $0.1 seems awfully little... I shot a photo for the cover of some CD yesterday and got $200 for it, which is probably around or less then 1/3 of what professionals charge, but this project took me about 3 hours (with post processing). I uploaded the images to my web server and sent the customer a link (usually I write them on a CD, but he chose to have them uploaded), so there's no cost for me. Seems much more remunerative then this stockphoto struggle you've been descibing.

But... maybe I'll try this out, must be some reason why all of you are so interested in this =)

Here are some stock sites and links

I order of the ones that make me the most money:

1.Istockphoto Over $1500.00
2.Shutterstock over $500.00
3.DreamstimeOver $400.00
4.Bigstockphoto Under $50.00
5.Canstockphoto Under $10.00

Mel,
thanks for posting this info. Just curious, over what period of time did these sales occur? Did you ever calculate what your $/image/year would be? (for example, some nature photographers use the rule of thumb of earning $1 per image per year for nature stock.)
Thanks,
John
