My sister recently got engaged, and asked me to take her engagement photo for the local newspaper. Does anyone have any suggestions or techniques that I should use? I want to get the best shot that I can. I'm going to take a lot of pictures, most likely using the raw compression. As far as poses and location, I'm going to look at some past examples of engagement announcements. I will most likely take an outdoors shot since I don't have a studio and am limited to the built in flash on my camera for indoor lighting. Thanks for the input!

Maverick,

Go for light colored clothes and a dark colored background, or vice versa.. you will need to submit a black and white 5x7 to the newspaper if your paper works the same way mine does... If it has to be in black and white, try to compose your photo with that in mind...

Also, keep the images simple. The resolution of a newspaper won't show small detail, it'll just get all muddied up. Oh, and when you process the raw image and change to B/W, look for fairly high contrast, it'll print better on newsprint.

I took pictures for my sisters wedding invitations. I didn't use digital I used film. We went around town with her fiance with a couple of spots in mind and I used up the whole role of film. I made 160 prints in my highschools dark room of the one she wanted for the invitations. It was crazy, I'm glad I have hair left. Some spots we went to were flower gardens and parks and the "winner" was tooken at a local unversity under a tree with a building in the background and flower pedals on the ground, made for a great composition. One thing I should of done though was used a shallow depth of field that way there is more infesus on the subject.
