New member with simple question. Other than driving me crazy what is the purpose of these darn woody dolls and why must there be so many pictues with them!?!? Am I missing something?!? AHHHHHHHH!!! |

I'm a rather new member myself and wondered the same. Not that it bothers me in the least, but they pop up pretty regularly. I think they make easy props and therein lies their popularity. |

They are used by artist as an aid to sketching the human body for one :)
Edit:
Got tired of the animated woody so I removed the img :)

Woodn't you like to know? Sorry I couldn't resist that. :)
I really wanted to say something about the guys who use these but thought I better be nice.:) I need to get out of here and go to bed before I get myself in trouble.

Cool animation!
They are very loyal to their individual owners and you don't have to pay them to model, plus they don't eat much. What more could you want? |

Snackwells...how are you?
Funny you should post...I have entered 3 challenges and you've commented on all three with constructive comments (thank you), but you haven't been fond of my pictures. Granted my first two were rushed I'm not overly fond of them myself. My third by far is my best (current 7's challenge, avg score is at 5.475), but much room to improve. I was joking with my wife that one of DPC goals for 2005 was to enter a picture that Snackwells likes...lol.
Keep up the great feedback.
Agree with the props point, but still drives me nuts. |

I have been seeing the Woody doll in at least every challenge [I think, if not, close to every challenge] since I have been a user here. I find them to be a very boring subject unless it̢۪s something funny, laughter is always good. I do not vote down a picture just because it has a woody in it but I find it hard to visualize it as an interesting subject.
As for your question what are they for. From my understanding the Woody doll is an asset for a photographer learning lighting and shadows. I may be wrong on that, if I am please correct me.

You are correct. I was going to mention that.
If you have not tried to photograph a Woody in a studio setting I wouldn't knock it to much. It is not easy getting the correct lighting and etc.
I bought the large and two small versions and I use them in my garage studio all the time.

Great points...Definately see the value from a teaching and learning perspective...and will give it a try.

aw...and I thought this was another Pee-Wee Herman thread.
5 bucks at Ikea and you can have a woody yourself.
I seen a few woodettes around too.
I always thought that they were for Artists learning to sketch the human form, but they are great for getting lighting down. My local art store has a almost lifesize poseable hand made of wood that looks like a pretty cool subject. |

I bought mines at IKEA. There's a woody challenge thread somewhere also. |

They have the best price ever on Woody's.
Don't buy them at an art supply store!
Search the internet first :)
One local art supply store wanted like $25 - $30 for the small ones.
